During the holidays, soft targets require your attention — and vigilance

This holiday season, many of us will be shopping in malls, joining holiday gatherings at entertainment venues, frequenting restaurants for holiday events and attending services in houses of worship. All these events have one thing in common: they will be held in public places, often with easy access by anyone. What they also have in common is that they are soft targets.

Soft targets are public locations that do not have any obvious security protections in place. This is in contrast to hard targets, which are well guarded and fortified. Airports fall within the group of hard targets, with the Transportation Security Administration overseeing airport checkpoints to ensure the security of the air system.

Got dad's old M-1 carbine and been shooting it the past few months.

Very good in a closed in situation like a house or a hallway.

I just ran across this story and to think we have to worry about going to a shopping mall out of security concerns at Christmas —or anytime—is very sad to me. Thanks Progressives and Democrats y’all achieved your goals.

I have serious concerns about security at our church for a couple of reasons I won’t get into at this time. Our head usher is also very concerned - he got his concealed carry permit & practices to be proficient. He has also consulted with the local police who told him the church had to give permission for him to carry concealed on their premises. He told the church that if they did not allow it, he would no longer be attending. He’s still there, so they must have agreed.

Christmas Eve the church will be packed with standing room only - I won’t be there. Instead, I will be at a very small church way out in the country. It’s not an appealing target & the good old boy types who attend will take care of business if a problem should occur.

“The same can be said about places of worship, with most attendees using the same entrance and exit. Where are the alternatives? How easily can they be accessed?”

I lived next to a policman. He told me that most churches in our area were somewhat protected. Almost all have a cadre of ‘greeters’ stationed near the front door. He pointed out that those greeters were almost never seen once the services started. Instead, they were patrolling the parking lots and maintaining security on entrances. Almost all were ‘armed’.

And face the door or entrance. After the Gaza incident, I carry all the time.
