The Israel-Hamas war has sparked heated debates and demonstrations across the US – particularly on college campuses – as the Palestinian death toll continues to rise. As many young people express pro-Palestinian sentiments in a country that has long supported Israel, pundits and commentators have blamed social media platforms like TikTok.
But what we’re seeing is also part of a long-term trend that points to a stark generational divide over the Arab-Israeli conflict. Polling from recent years shows that younger generations in the US have increasingly become more sympathetic toward Palestinians than Israel.
In 2017, Gallup polling found net sympathy toward Israelis versus Palestinians among millennials was at +25%. By March 2023, that had dropped to -2% among millennials. Comparatively, net sympathy for Israelis among older generations has held relatively steady and is much higher in general.
Similarly, a Pew Research Center poll from 2022 found only 41% of those aged 18-29 and 49% of those aged 30-49 had a favorable view of Israel, compared to 60% of those aged 50-64 and 69% of those aged 65 or older.
The generational divide is also evident among American Jews. A 2021 survey from the Jewish Electorate Institute, for example, found that younger US Jews were more likely than older Jews to agree with sharply critical statements about Israel. The survey showed that 43% of Jewish voters under 40 agreed that “Israel's treatment of Palestinians is similar to racism in the US," compared to 32% of Jewish voters between 40-64 and 27% of those older than 64

If there is anything to take from this, it is how morally vacuous that generation is.
We of an older generation may be guilty of moral insufficiency, not doubt, but just as often it was a deficiency of attention, rather than a positive moral decision when many of us fell victim to that.
The generation we call “Millenials” seems largely to draw a moral equivalence between Israel and Hamas at best, or open and decisive support for Hamas at worst, seems to have been the subject of concentrated indoctrination by elements that reject the principles America was founded on.
I will not damn that entire generation, but there are too many in it to keep me from making this overarching observation and arriving at my conclusions.
Interesting graph.
Is the “Lost Gen” decline due to their continued dependence on traditional mainstream media??
oops “Silent Gen” !
Well, when they have the Presbyterian church (my denomination) talking for years about divestment from Israel due to racism and colonialism....They hear it in the pews.
... and another observation (question, really):
A rating of Zero would mean “neutral” wrt sympathy between Israel and Palestine, right?
Bottom line is this.
The kids were brainwashed by Democrats.
We got ours, should enjoy what life we
have left, and our kids can go EFF off in their dream world.
Spend their inheritance, since they will just piss it away on BS.
I’m a grandfather and Godfather, not too impressed with the kids, and their lack of discipline and world skills.
We’ve raised a generation of Jew hating Nazi’s, oh great
Not Jew hating nazis but rather pacifist namby-pambies who flinch at the thought of death
This is what the education system has done - brainwashing.
Those with Grandfathers or Fathers that told family what they saw, have a different take.
Those with with Brothers and Sisters who lived it have a different take.
Some want Never Again across the board for all.
Blue Haired, Intersectional, Vegan They/Thems can’t think freely.
I want folks to pay for the horrors they commit.
Ham-ass murderers will be hunted down and eliminated.
Might take years, but worth the effort.
No moral equivalence. The Jews ain’t the Baddies.
Not surprising since the USA has become a Balkanized empire filled with primitive mongrels from all over the world, who have no forbearing of American traditions and way of life.
When they refer to young “Jewish Americans”, they really mean self-loathing Golden Calf Jews who have more in common with Karl Marx than they do with King David.
>>A rating of Zero would mean “neutral” wrt sympathy between Israel and Palestine, right?
Yes, the left hand scale is the difference. 0 means a 50-50 split. 40 means a 70-30 split with the 70% sympathizing more with Israel.
Not sure why the odd results for the Silent Gen. Maybe, since this is the above late 70s age group, the numbers are small and the statistics are noisy.
>>self-loathing Golden Calf Jews who have more in common with Karl Marx than they do with King David.
Actually they seem to have a lot in common with David and the kings of Israel/Judah.
Moses and Joshua? Not so much.
Yes, excellent observation. American Jews are modern day Canaanites.
The massive influx of foreign-born into the country would have its largest impact in the “Millenials” cohort. I wonder if they just brought their negative opinion of Jews in here with them.
“... the numbers are small and the statistics are noisy.”
Yes, possibly.
But a lot of the older folks I know still depend on their traditional sources for the “news” (ABC, CBS, NYT, etc) and THOSE sources have been brain-washing people for a long time to hate Israel.
The other thing I would take from it is to abolish the anti-Semitic teachers unions. They are not? Where was the national outcry from them when the anti-Semitic teachers union official was outed in Maryland?

Cartoonist Al Capp had them pegged back in 1966. Students Wildly Indignant about Nearly Everything!(S.W.I.N.E.)
I see they have not changed since then.

It is stunning to me that these people walk among us, who feel they can openly support Hamas, after what they have done.
It isn’t like 1941 when someone might have trouble believing what the Nazis were doing in concentration camps.
This was on video, nearly instantaneously available to the world.
I cannot wrap my head around that.
