I spent a week in Germany years ago before the Wall came down. Had a fly-drive, traveled all over the country, no speed limits on the autobahn. Had a great time in. Berlin, took bus to East Berlin and it was a wreck. Munich was far too expensive for me, both the good hotels and the restaurants, only stayed one night. Had a wonderful time in Bavaria, though some people pointed at me as a Juden (long black hair then).

I have no idea whether this article is correct about costs. Isn’t it a somewhat socialist country? My friend’s daughter lives in Munich, married there and raising adorable little kids who are bi-lingual. I’ll ask him.

Courtesy of Uncle Sam, I lived in West Berlin for 3 years in the 60’s while it was the “Island City”, surrounded by the Wall. Most magnificent, enjoyable, enlightening and indeed spiritual period in my life! Still the fairy tale, picturesque Germany of old (and my ancestors’) at that time. Still plenty of WW 2 damage evident but an endless beehive of repair and reconstruction underway. Unfortunately, with the former communists taking up the “green” movement and uncalled for collective guilt instilled in the German populace, it is not the same Germany I knew and loved.
