India turns to coal as hydro generation falls

India produced a record amount of electricity from coal in October

...

Coal remains fundamental to the country’s energy security

...

India will depend on its mines and rail network to satisfy rapidly growing electricity demand and ensure reliability.

Total electricity demand met increased by 24 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) (+21%) in October compared with the same month a year earlier.

...

the electricity system turned to gas (1.6 billion kWh, +103%) and especially coal (28 billion kWh, +33%) to meet demand.

Coal-fired generators produced a seasonal record of 111 billion kWh in October 2023 up from 84 billion kWh in October 2022.

Coal satisfied 80% of electricity demand up from 73% a year earlier, while the hydro share fell to 9% from more than 15%.

COAL REMAINS KING..

...

coal units have much higher utilisation and are particularly critical to meet load in the shoulder seasons of March-April and September-October, when renewable generation is lower but air-conditioning load is relatively high.

In the final analysis, India’s electricity system remains overwhelmingly reliant on coal for baseload and ensuring reliability.

To cope with rising electricity demand and poor hydrological conditions, India boosted mine production and the volume hauled by the railways to generators to record rates in October.

Coal output was up by 13 million tonnes in October and by a total of 87 million tonnes since January compared with a year earlier.

The volume despatched to power producers was up 8 million tonnes in October and by 35 million tonnes in the first ten months.

Even so, coal stocks at generators were severely depleted in September and October, and by the end of October had been reduced to just 7.5 days at the required level.

Country after country is learning you shouldn't always listen to the USA. They made themselves victims with aid packages.

I remember one specifically...If you don't join the LBGt club....no aid for you. Think under Obama.

India and China are using coal in great quantities, and nuclear power generation is growing as the panicking “Greens” in Europe are declaring nuclear now “green.” Clean coal technology is becoming ever more effective, and the EV scams are unwinding. Reality has a way of insisting that fantasy is “narrative” not clear and demonstrable truth.

This Climate Farce is killing whole industries. We still need the necessities of life.....and we should have some choices in the matter...like gas vs elec stove.

We should mine baby mine coal and burn it in power plants with proper precipitators and scrubbers.

More electric power will improve India’s public health vastly more than the alleged negative effect of global warming.

The Navajo nation mines coal and distributes coal for free to tribal members. The members literally bring a truck and load it up. About 20% of dwellings on the Rez have no electricity. Majority use wood or coal to heat in the winter.

We should drill baby drill and both use the oil for ourselves and export it.

We should mine baby mine coal and both use it for our power and export it.

We should drill baby drill for natural gas and both use it for ourselves and export it.

We should mine baby mine minerals (including ones good for EV's and such) and both use them for ourselves and export them.

The Dims always tell us to pick one side or the other (i.e. coal or solar, ICE cars or EV's, etc.) to keep us polarized. Our response as conservatives is that the government ain't got no business even defining the "sides" and should let the free market do the work to provide everybody what they want. And if we do that with our natural resources as well, including export them, we'll increase our standing all over the world among the various technologies and whatever they want. If they want our oil they'll have to pay for it and be nice. Same if they want our coal or cobalt or lithium or anything else.

Amazing how people who claim the phrase “climate change” as a mantra don’t understand that wind, rain, snow melt, and river flows are entirely inconsistent and unreliable. Faith in their Gaia Goddess must far outweigh the capacity for logical thought. And their slavering hatred for doubt and heresy would make Torquemada blanche.

A lot of hydro power in India is lost because China dams all of the rivers upstream. The whole of Indochina which includes Vietnam and Thailand is dependent on the Mekong river which is dammed in at least 10 places before it ever gets out of Chinese controlled territories.

It’s insanity what is happening with FedGov regulation of cars right now, and it’s totally under the radar for most.
