'The Falkland Islands are British. THAT is non-negotiable': Grant Shapps shoots down new Argentinian president's declaration that 'reclaiming' the territory was 'non-negotiable'
UK Daily Mail ^ | 11/21/2023 | RACHAEL BUNYAN

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps today took a swipe at the Argentina's newly elected president after the former 'tantric sex coach' vowed to 'reclaim' the Falkland Islands and said doing so was 'non-negotiable'.

Shapps hit back and said the Falkland Islands 'are British' and that is 'non-negotiable' after Argentinian president-elect Javier Milei said the territory belongs to Argentina and vowed to 'get it back'.

Milei, who uses a medium to communicate with his dead dog for advice on political matters, pulled off a massive upset by beating Argentina's Economy Minister Sergio Massa in Sunday's polarised presidential runoff.

But during his presidential campaign, Milei insisted that Britain returning the Falkland Islands was 'non-negotiable', adding that the territory, known as the Malvinas in Argentina, is Argentine.

In response, Shapps said today: 'The Falkland Islands are British. That is non-negotiable and undeniable.'

Referring to the results of the island's 2013 referendum, Shapps continued: '99.8% of islanders voted to remain British and we will always defend their right to self-determination and the UK's sovereignty.'

Milei, a right-wing economist known as 'el Loco' - or the Madman - who promised to shake-up Argentina with his win, had said he would 'make every effort' to get the Falkland Islands back - but stopped short of saying he would go to war over them.

He insisted it was 'non-negotiable' for Britain to hand the Falklands over to Argentina, comparing it to the UK returning Hong Kong to China.

The Falklands were the subject of a short but brutal war after Argentina invaded in 1982. Britain drove out the invaders after dispatching a naval armada, but the issue has never been considered settled in Buenos Aires.

The Brits are no longer capable of a redo of the Falklands war, neither militarily, nor morally. The Royal Navy is reduced to near zero. The RAF and Fleet Air Arm has no ability to strike Argentina of to even deploy to the Falklands.
They have given nearly all their ammo to Ukraine.

A smart asymmetric Falklands offensive would win. Simply arrive in commercial shipping and walk ashore unarmed, and in huge numbers and claim to be refugees. The Brits are incapable of mass arrests or deportation. They are incapable of shooting at waves of Argie civilians. The Brits have 2800 people there. The Argies could triple that number with two or three “refugee ships” simply pulling in and dropping ramps. Basically, it would be a seafaring version of the Green March. Simply walk in with masses of settlers and refuse to leave.

Ironically, this economic system will be an improvement on Bidenomics, because a dead dog is right at least twice a day.

I had hopes for this guy Milei, but he's starting to sound like a Woody Allen movie character I remember.

"All girls under 16 years old ... are now 16 years old"
"The official language is Swedish"
All citizens are required to change their underwear every half hour..."

I think Argentina will do that eventually. Maybe in 10-20 years. The Brits will just give up. All the "natives" on the Falklands will just relocate to the UK.

They slack off on defense spending while expecting us to have their backs.

We should charge every country in NATO a tribute for the privilege of remaining in NATO. Otherwise, they can ask Ukraine what it's like living without the protection provided by NATO.

He may be a psycho but his economic policy is sound.

It was always British. Before the British colonized it, it was unpopulated.

Maybe Milei is just saying this as a negotiating tactic for something else he wants from the UK. But if he’s serious, he’s going to expend all the goodwill he’s garnered, rather quickly.

Do you seriously believe every dispute can only be settled by war? Argentina had their war with Britain. It was even stupider than most wars. They lost and were humiliated, and it brought down the Junta in power at the time. The new presidente shouts noisily, but carries a small stick. He should better get his own country in order, and stay away from military adventurism with large risks and small possible gains.

This is stupid for that and many other reasons. Falklands’ only value is symbolic, and a slim value at that. I liked this new President at first glance, including the Elvis sideburns and the jaunty, Trumpish mannerisms. But Trump is no war monger. “In peace, the young bury the old. In war, the old bury the young.” Don’t start your government on the wrong foot, Milei. Jefferson Davis’ presidency started and ended with war, which is to say: badly.

“Do you seriously believe every dispute can only be settled by war?”

No, Ukraine certainly could have been settled peacefully, but that wasn’t in the Neocon playbook, as evidenced by the history there as well as the Neocon history around the world.

Anyway, with the Neocons in the process of getting spanked, things will at least settle down somewhat in the world.

Sounds like Canadian Prime Minister MacKenzie King, who was in office from 1921-1930, then from 1935 to 1948.

One of the ships that survived Pearl Harbor and was later sold to Argentina was sunk in that war.

Methinks Argentina is in for a couple of bad years because of voting in a psycho for its next president.

Argentina's inflation rate this year is 185%. Last year it was 100%. Argentina's Peronist leftist government was a complete disaster, even by Argentine standards.
