'The Falkland Islands are British. THAT is non-negotiable': Grant Shapps shoots down new Argentinian president's declaration that 'reclaiming' the territory was 'non-negotiable'
UK Daily Mail ^ | 11/21/2023 | RACHAEL BUNYAN

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps today took a swipe at the Argentina's newly elected president after the former 'tantric sex coach' vowed to 'reclaim' the Falkland Islands and said doing so was 'non-negotiable'.

Shapps hit back and said the Falkland Islands 'are British' and that is 'non-negotiable' after Argentinian president-elect Javier Milei said the territory belongs to Argentina and vowed to 'get it back'.

Milei, who uses a medium to communicate with his dead dog for advice on political matters, pulled off a massive upset by beating Argentina's Economy Minister Sergio Massa in Sunday's polarised presidential runoff.

But during his presidential campaign, Milei insisted that Britain returning the Falkland Islands was 'non-negotiable', adding that the territory, known as the Malvinas in Argentina, is Argentine.

In response, Shapps said today: 'The Falkland Islands are British. That is non-negotiable and undeniable.'

Referring to the results of the island's 2013 referendum, Shapps continued: '99.8% of islanders voted to remain British and we will always defend their right to self-determination and the UK's sovereignty.'

Milei, a right-wing economist known as 'el Loco' - or the Madman - who promised to shake-up Argentina with his win, had said he would 'make every effort' to get the Falkland Islands back - but stopped short of saying he would go to war over them.

He insisted it was 'non-negotiable' for Britain to hand the Falklands over to Argentina, comparing it to the UK returning Hong Kong to China.

The Falklands were the subject of a short but brutal war after Argentina invaded in 1982. Britain drove out the invaders after dispatching a naval armada, but the issue has never been considered settled in Buenos Aires.

There’s a chance that Brazil may not even qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

Of all the problems Argentina is facing how stupid does •Libertarian• Milei have to be to choose this as his rallying cry?

Self-explanatory.

Tough luck UK, you blew your wad on Ukraine and now you don’t have jack to try to fight off Argentina. It’s over for you.

Every Argentine politician promises to "reclaim" the Falklands. None of them have ever actually invaded the Falklands. Shooting one's mouth off about "las Malvinas" is just a requirement to get elected over there. They were talking about "Malvinas Argentinas" when I was there in 2010-2011.

Why does Argentina want the Falkland Islands? The only thing you can do there is raise sheep, but the Argentines like beef.

It's a national pride thing. It's also a ploy to distract the Argentine people from the mess their economy is in and the politicians who made it so.

I don’t think they’ll attack with Biden in the White House, since Biden’s bunch will use it as a pretext for Regime Change, due to his liking of Trump.

But with Trump in office, things could be much different, and Trump will be in no hurry to help the UK, not one bit.

Hmm, for a guy who claims to be anti-war you seem pretty happy about that prospect, Bob. One might almost think you're just against folks fighting back against invaders in their own country, rather than anti-invasion.

In any event, Argentina does not have the military capacity to retake the Falklands, even with the UK's diminished military. Whether the US president decides to help the UK or not is irrelevant.

I’m fine with war, such as Israel in Gaza (try to find postings by me supporting a cease fire).

But I do have a problem with needlessly starting World War 3, be it with China or Russia. I prefer my children grow up in world that isn’t destroyed.

So I take it then you oppose Putin, who is the only leader in the Ukraine conflict who has talked about using nuclear weapons? Neither Biden nor Zelenskyy have done that.

I see. Putin invaded because a Neocon told him to.

Forcing him?? How? Is Putin not the undisputed commander in chief of Russian armed forces?

The proxy war was “catastrophic” because Putin didn’t get to win uncontested. Because those pesky Ukrainians kept fighting back effectively, until the UK and Brandon, neither of whom are “Neocons,” were embarrassed into supplying Ukraine with kit.

This “goaded” Putin into making empty nuclear threats, which intimidated the UK and the US into dithering about supplying Ukraine adequate kit to win, just enough to not lose.

Your narrative isn’t even internally consistent, let alone factual.

Pivot to demonizing Zelensky, already. Let’s get this over with.

It’s time the Neocons STOP trying to start World War 3. No need for it. Hopefully the spanking they get in Ukraine will lead to that outcome.

I'm glad you agree that Putin should stop trying to start WWIII and deserves a real spanking in Ukraine.

The Falkland Islands have been a British possession since the 1700s, with an 8 year break in the LATE 1700s. The Brits have had an uninterrupted reign over these islands since then.

Argentina has NEVER possessed entirety of the islands. EVER. Even their 1980s invasion didn’t gain them one square inch of defensible claim.

Very interesting. It appears the short blurbs I did a quickie search were somewhat more incomplete than I anticipated.

Nevertheless, the islands ARE a British possession, and have been for centuries.
