By most accounts, Speaker Mike Johnson inherited a House Republican majority in disarray after the sudden ouster of his predecessor last month.
But as Johnson, R-La., tries to rebuild that slim majority, he’s fast running into the same hard-right factions and divisions that Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., was unable to tame. That’s disrupting the party’s agenda, shelving priorities and leaving gnawing questions about any leader’s ability to govern.
Capitol Hill devolved into fresh scenes of political chaos this past week as tensions soared. A Republican senator challenged a Teamsters union boss to a brawl, one of several outbursts involving lawmakers, and the untested new speaker was forced to abandon his own party’s schedule and send everyone home early for Thanksgiving.
“This place is a pressure cooker,” Johnson lamented. Hopefully, he said, people will “cool off.” […]
Conservatives took particular umbrage at the temporary spending bill, called a continuing resolution, that maintained spending at the levels that had been agreed to last year, when Democrats had full control of Congress and Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., was the speaker.
“When are we going to do what we said we were going to do?” (Chip) Roy railed. “When are we going to act like a Republican majority and start fighting?”
It’s the same complaint that led the hard-right bloc to oust McCarthy in October, the first unseating of a speaker in U.S. history, and will threaten Johnson’s leadership. …

How is Johnson in control of a Senator woofing at a union thing?
No way we would shut down the government during the holidays, that would be just so mean and republicans are not mean ( unless it’s to each other).
No way we have discipline in the party, after all we are republicans and have no need for a “whip” to keep them inline.
I wonder if the GOP rules say anything about what would happen if nobody wanted to lend us money anymore. What do the GOP rules say about a trillion dollar interest payment.
No way will the republican congress have a strong, no nonsense leader, ever, they are just a bunch of go along to get along guys. The girls in the party are stronger willed than most of the men.
Why wasn’t Ken Buck kicked out of the freedom caucus and why was MTG thrown out.
In fact all of the republicans that voted against the impeachment of Mayorkas should be stripped of their committees. Make them pay for their stupidity.
You mean like following conservative principles? That’s not viable?
BTW, the original meaning of “umbrage” is to cast a shadow. Could it be said that the left-wing members of the GOP cast a long shadow?
The Founding Fathers created no such system. Later generations did, particularly with amendments directly inspired by the Communist Manifesto (e.g. #16 and #17).
It was not the federal government that pushed for civil war, in fact. But keep piling on the false dilemmas, and keep insinuating that one-party rule is viable.
OK, go ahead an try to make the majority of the caucus follow the principles you value.
Just know when they don’t see it your way, that majority will do what they wish and there’s not jack sh!t you can do about it.
I don’t expect them to, knowing what they are. If they had any good character, they would make themselves behave in a conservative and lawful manner, keeping the promises they made to their constituents; but because they do not, they somehow must be beyond reproach?
It is not about my subjective POV or theirs. Only a liberal would insinuate that objective truth does not exist.
“Only a liberal would insinuate that objective truth does not exist.”
Who did that?
Your imagination?
Just making a general statement. Have a good night . . .
No bias in this report /s
I see what you did there.
There is some arcane rule that allows the Speaker to re visit the bill if he votes for it.
This is not over by far.
