For Darya Stepanova, a mother of two who lives in a small town on the eastern side of the Ural mountains, soaring prices for everything from baby food to nappies have forced her family to cut back on most treats and eating out.
The Stepanov family is one of millions of Russian families having to cut back due to the significant changes forced on Russia's economy by the war in Ukraine and the myriad sanctions imposed by the West.
Stepanova, 34, her five year old son and newborn son, try to make ends meet on the 50,000 roubles ($550) a month her husband Sergei earns. When she goes through the snow to the shops, she inspects the prices to search for bargains.
"I can see how everything has become more expensive in the course of just these past five years," Stepanova told Reuters in her flat in Sredneuralsk, a town on the shores of Lake Iset about 25 km (15 miles) north of the Urals city of Yekaterinburg and 1400 km (870 miles) east of Moscow.
"Before you could buy food worth a thousand roubles for three or four days easily, but now when you go to the shop a thousand roubles is nothing - you can only buy food for everyday needs, like milk, yogurt, bread and that's it - your thousand has flown away."
Baby milk has quadrupled in price over the five years since her first child, she said, while the price of prams have tripled to 60,000 roubles. Prices for disposable nappies and baby food have at least doubled, she said.
The family's income has not risen by anything like that while the rouble has fallen against the U.S. dollar since February 2022, when President Vladimir Putin ordered troops into Ukraine

Patrushev Russia stronk as bull!
Street people here in Oregon are generally able-bodied young men. They LIKE living on the streets. There is a smaller subset that is either insane or addicted to alcohol, methamphetamine, or heroin.
Our homelessness is not a function of a market economy, it is a function of moral rot and decay associated with liberal/progressive policies.
50,000 roubles = $550
so a ruble is worth 1.1 cents
one Mexican peso is worth more than 5 rubles!
So you think all Zeepers are black???
I don’t think so.
Great non-sequitur!
The Economy is upside down. If you are rich, then you are doing well. The working poor are suffering the most.
Avg. US poverty=
3br 2ba home-990 sq ft
1.5 cars
obese
or better than the working class the world over.
Ruble is down 50% since 7/21-that’s why he is paying 15%.
What universe do you inhabit so far away from planet earth?
just a reflection of the weakness of Russia’s economy
As measured in US dollars…
—> Ruble is down 50%
As measured in us dollars
Actually, Spam is expensive lately. Reality is that, most people around the world would welcome that as a regulate staple in their diet.
Plus, I like it, and most people in my family do too. And, during the Covid epidemic, they ran out of it in stores; even the generic spam was gone.
And, I’d prefer eating Spam than turkey for the holidays; turkey is tasteless, while Spam is full of taste. Why do you think it’s lasted over 80 years as a product that people actually like and buy?
Well, thank you for sharing that with us. Such a diatribe in reaction to a photo with no comment. 😄
You FR Eastern Europeans are so easily triggered. LOL
Enjoy your Thanksgiving Spam and to each one’s own!
A lie will go around the world before truth puts its boots on.
“al-Rooters” and its Hamas embeds...
That is not the propper way to serve Spam. You should lay it on it’s side in a pan. Make cross hatch marks with a knife. Stud every other box with a clove. Soread a little honey or brown sugar syrup on it and sprinkle with cinnamon. Then bake it in the oven for a while until the rich smell fills the air. Then sit and eat and be glad you are not TOO poor to afford Spam.
The Zeepers sure know how to serve Spam. But we knew that.
BTW, that’s pretty much how I prepare to bake a ham. But, we’re having turkey this year. We prefer it. Ham is more of a New Year’s thing with us.
“soaring prices bite as election looms”
Is this about the USA ?
“Re-elect me so I can condemn another 300,000 of your sons to be killed or injured in my pointless war”
Would Lyndon Johnson please pick up the white phone !
The story is BS. There is zero unemployment in Russia on the reindustrialization. The job that paid 27,000 rubles per month before covid now pays 90,000 rubles. That is a rise way above inflation.
