GRAND HAVEN, MI — Ottawa County Commissioner Roger Bergman, a moderate Republican from Grand Haven, will not seek reelection in 2024.

He was the only incumbent commissioner to beat an Ottawa Impact challenger in the 2022 Republican primary election. Ottawa Impact is a group of far-right Republicans who ran on a platform of individual freedom and parental rights.

Bergman, of District 10, represents the cities of Ferrysburg and Grand Haven and Spring Lake Township precincts 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6. He’s been on the county board of commissioners since 2012.

Prior to his role as a county commissioner, Bergman served as Grand Haven’s mayor and a Grand Haven city council member. He is an Ottawa County native, born in Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian Schools and Hope College.

In 2024, the county commission seats will switch from two-year terms to four-year terms, and Bergman said he’s ready to retire from elected office.

WOW!

That is FAR RIGHT!

These guys are Radicals

Better put them on the FBI terrorist watch list.

/S

Admittedly these are not typical issues for a County Commissioner race butt these are not normal times.

Individual rights and parental rights are under attack at all levels.

The Left is on a mad rush to take our kids away from us much like the USSR did.

On a few issues

He cut taxes.

He would not be a Democrat today.

He is also responsible for Government Employee unions, which is largely responsible for many of our problems today.

Yes, he was not as Conservative as me or you, but by today’s standards he was Very Conservative. He supported the Gold Standard!

Yes, JFK was a conservative Democrat, even for his day.

Which is probably one of the reasons he did not complete his term.

That and he chose poorly when he took LBJ as his running mate.

That may not have worked out in the long run, but it was wise in the beginning. Johnson assured St John would carry TX, while the Demo machine and the mob in Chicago did the same in IL. It's how he won the election.

True, but did you ever wonder why the media doesn’t use the term “Moderate” when describing conservative Democrats? Instead they use the term “Centrist”.

Think about it - what’s the opposite of a “Moderate”? It is an EXTREMIST. So the media cleverly implies all but a relative handful of Republicans are “Extremists”, but that NONE of the Democrats, even the ones celebrating the murdering of babies, are implied to be “Extremists”, instead the implied description for those are ‘liberal’ or ‘progressive’.

Kennedy was lucky (at least until this month 60 years ago). He had his Harvard intellectuals talking him up as a liberal, without his having to do much that they really wanted. The country was still in Eisenhower mode — contented with how things were and determined to beat the Russians — and Kennedy was stylish, which intellectuals and a lot of voters though was enough.

If Kennedy had lived, though, he would have followed his family, his college, his state and his party leftward. Otherwise, it would have made for some very awkward Kennedy family Thanksgiving dinners (though none so awkward as Thanksgiving 1963 turned out to be).
