OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau denounced antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents in Canada Wednesday, saying attacks against Jewish people and businesses, do not belong in Canada.
“We’re seeing, right now, a rise in antisemitism. That is terrifying. Molotov cocktails thrown at synagogues, horrific threats of violence targeting Jewish businesses, targeting Jewish day cares with hate. This needs to stop, this is not who we are as Canadians.”
Trudeau also said attacks are happening against Muslim Canadians, as well.
“The rise of Islamophobia we’re seeing across this country and around the world is also unacceptable. The expressions of hate against Muslims, against Palestinians, against anyone waving a Palestinian flag. This is unacceptable. This is not who we are as Canadians.”
On Tuesday a synagogue and Jewish community centre in Montreal were firebombed. In Toronto, pro-Palestinian protesters have been assailing Jewish-owned businesses and calling for boycotts against them.
“If Canada can’t figure this out, tell me: what corner of the world is going to figure this out?” Trudeau said, referring to the rising tensions in Canada over the Israel-Hamas war. “This is a moment where a country like Canada, which has been deeply proud of the fact that we get along here in diversity better than just about any other place in the world, this is a time where we need to lead.”
With just over a month since Hamas’s deadly rampage in Israel Trudeau reiterated calls for a humanitarian pause.

Trudeau started decently enough by denouncing antisemitism in Canada. But then he just had to dilute the message, and provide a distraction.
