I’ll first address the matter philosophically, and then practically.
In a capitalist system, it is possible to own an elephant. That is, there is private property. Yes, it is possible to own an elephant. Since there is private property, it is at least possible in theory to own a human. This is what Obama means when he says slavery is compatible with capitalism.
Now, let’s ask if it’s possible under communism to own an elephant? No, it isn’t. Nobody can own an elephant under communism because there is no private property. Given that there isn’t any private property, there no private property in people. Now, since there’s no private property in people, does this mean there is no slavery? Actually, the answer to this question is surprising: just like the government owns all elephants under communism, so too the government own all people. Possibly the people are treated well by the government, but that’s another issue.
At a philosophical level, the difference between capitalism and communism on the issue of slavery is that it is possible under some forms of capitalism that there are slaves, but the very definition of communism is that all people are slaves.
Now, we can ask the empirical question: where was slavery - in the real sense of the word, involving subjugation of some by others - ended first; and, how was slavery ended elsewhere?
Slavery was ended first in western Europe, and slavery was ended elsewhere in the world by a great abolitionist movement that arose in western Europe.
Slavery was ended fundamentally because of the belief that all people are imbued with something sacred if not divine. Previously, various people outlawed slavery within their community, while condoning the enslavement of others. It took a while for the principle of universal brotherhood to be established, and even when it was established, in western Europe, there was backsliding and slavery of others was condoned by Europeans in colonies.
In contrast, various forms of socialism have revived slavery since the end of slavery in most of the world. Think of Nazism and Communism and their slave labor camps. Furthermore, slavery persists in North Korea and selected other totalitarian places today; and, illegal slavery (human trafficking) remains a large and possibly growing business.
Slavery and the rule of the powerful is the natural state of mankind, and Obama among others covet that power. Indeed, the popularity of t.v. series like Game of Thrones speaks to the coveting of power. Power-lust is so attractive that people will vicariously enjoy the exercise of power by others. If you think people are naturally good, think again. History shows us that many people are evil.
Our struggle for freedom is perennial and just because we made some progress in this struggle, doesn’t mean that greed, sexual perversion and power-lust have been defeated and our struggle is over. Indeed, in some ways, the attempt to re-establish all-powerful government is on the march, and our revolution is in jeopardy.

Government control comes under labels like communism, socialism (really communism, but less stringent, like being a “little pregnant”), fascism. Government controlled markets, currencies, are ownership, taxation is enslavement (a matter of KIND not of degree - see the above on “a little pregnant”) if someone claims to OWN any portion of your labor that’s enslavement.
Free market economics, “Laissez-faire”, is what people do among themselves normally without the thug hand of government or organized crime (but I repeat myself) taking “ten percent for the big guy” who can seize property, split up families kill and/or imprison you if you don’t comply.
