PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Barely four years before a gunman's deadly rampage in Maine, a state that is staunchly protective of gun rights, the governor signed a law aimed at preventing a mass shooting like the one Wednesday night that claimed at least 18 lives.

This comes down to risk-minimization vs elimination. In investing, you lower your risk of loss or volatility by spreading your eggs across several baskets. However, one risk you cannot diversity away is the "systematic risk" or the risk inherent in the system...call it market risk or whatever, the basic reality is some baseline level of risk will ALWAYS exist, and you can't avoid it.

The same applies to America, her freedoms, and insane acts of violence.

Laws that support, life, liberty, and property are right and proper. Many laws act as a deterrent and will stop people on the margin from doing bad things...this is akin to diversifying away the non-systematic risk. Thus laws criminizing murder, are right and proper.

However, in a nation like America where freedom reigns and the individual trumps the collective, the risk of a maniac going on a killing spree is Undiversifiable. It is idiosyncratic.

The adults in the room understand on some baseline level, in a relatively free society of 330MM people who are LARGELY civilized, you'll ALWAYS have a few pathological maniacs who will shoot up a club, derail a train, etc. Thus, random acts of violence, are the Undiversifiable/systematic risk of a free society.

Sure, maybe some laws can help, like liberal application of the 2nd Amendment and concealed carry. But uncivilized folks will act uncivilized.

The political class and purveyors of Authority Bias want you to think the idiosyncratic risk of a free sociey CAN be eliminated, via shredding civil liberties, e.g., we can eliminate mass shootings by an assault-weapons band, yellow flag laws, and the inevitable welding of a GoPro to the heads of 330MM people with central monitoring in DC.

EVEN THEN, that wouldn't be perfect...after all, people in jail still get drugs and weapons.

You can't stomp out all bad folks. THAT is the ugly truth.

Why is it that when laws fail, the knee jerk reaction is to pass more laws? (Consider what the definition of insanity is.)

some say more is needed

A few signs about gun-free zones would probably clinch the deal, especially if they are in English, French (for the Canadians) and Spanish (for the invaders).

Risk is never eliminated; just mitigated down to a level that is consistent with management's appetite for risk.

“It is a false choice to suggest we must choose between either upholding the Second Amendment or passing reasonable gun safety laws to save lives,”

I don’t think she knows the definition of infringement. But then she is a very stupid person.

The article refers to the "permissive gun measures in Maine". Yet not one person in the bowling alley was armed. Doesn't sound very permissive to me.

If the gun measures in Maine really were "permissive" someone in the bowling alley would have been able to take out the insane shooter. Instead they were sitting ducks.

interesting how the leftist patrons of Moe&Ron’s restaurant STILL can’t figure out that the criminal element of society doesn’t really understand or care that the thing leftists demand you can’t do are the very things criminals do ANYWAY! go figure...right?

Someone said the other day, new gun laws make as much sense as instead of keeping drunk drivers off the road, just ban sober drivers.

None of this stuff will work in all cases. There is no possible way to ban guns. None.

Well, there is one way. They can uninvent guns. I challenge the left to uninvent something. Let’s start small. Uninvent the paper clip. When you are successful at uninventing the paper clip, let’s talk about uninventing firearms.

the REAL criminals are the ones who decided that a “gun free zone” was in the interest of their patrons. fyi...NEVER frequent any establishment that doesn’t trust their armed patrons to eliminate an armed threat.

So if a mentally ill type is identified, you go take their guns away, and leave them at home,… with knives, baseball bats, machetes, gasoline, electricity, pressure cookers, poisons, the ability to go get more guns etc.

Good plan libtards…this red flag thing sounds like just the ticket!

Should work fine, as long as "home" is being locked up in a rubber room.

IMHO, the greatest deterrent to a mass shooter is the prospect of running into another person with a firearm or, heaven forbid, several persons with firearms. Think Kyle Rittenhaus or Eli Dicken.

Gun restrictions won’t stop mass shootings.

Getting rid of gun free zones and allowing Constitutional carry, even concealed, will.

If someone was armed at those places, I have no doubt the death toll would have been less, just like happened in those church shootings some years back in Texas, where good guys with a gun stopped the slaughter.

Gun-grabber blame the Card killings on what one called Maine’s “weak gun laws.” “It is a false choice to suggest we must choose between either upholding the Second Amendment or passing reasonable gun safety laws to save lives,” VP Harris said.
<><>Harris said gun violence is the “leading cause” of death for US children
<><>she called on “Congress” to pass stronger gun control laws,
<><>make background checks universal,
<><>pass a red flag law
<><>and ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

Oh, Harris, is this the same “Congress” you say should trample 2A rights,
the self-same Congress hell bent on supplying weapons to foreign countries?

Biden and the Democrats are OK with arming foreign countries
but grabbing guns from Americans is an obsession w/ them.

Fact Sheet of MARCH 16, 2022-——U.S. Security Assistance for Ukraine

President Biden today, MARCH 16, 2022, announced an additional $800 million in security assistance to Ukraine, bringing the total U.S. security assistance committed to Ukraine to $1 billion in just the past week, and a total of $2 billion since the start of the Biden Administration.

The assistance will take the form of direct transfers of equipment from the Department of Defense to the Ukrainian military to help them defend their country against Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified invasion.

The MARCH 16, 2022 new $800 million assistance package includes:

800 Stinger anti-aircraft systems;
2,000 Javelin, 1,000 light anti-armor weapons,
6,000 AT-4 anti-armor systems;
100 Tactical Unmanned Aerial Systems;
100 grenade launchers, 5,000 rifles, 1,000 pistols, 400 machine guns, and 400 shotguns;
Over 20 million rounds of small arms ammunition and grenade launcher and mortar rounds;
25,000 sets of body armor; and
25,000 helmets.

In addition to the MARCH 16, 2022 weapons listed above, previous US assistance committed to Ukraine includes:

Over 600 Stinger anti-aircraft systems;
Approximately 2,600 Javelin anti-armor systems;
Five Mi-17 helicopters;
Three patrol boats;
Four counter-artillery and counter-unmanned aerial system tracking radars;
Four counter-mortar radar systems;
200 grenade launchers and ammunition;
200 shotguns and 200 machine guns;
Nearly 40 million rounds of small arms ammunition
Over 1 million grenade, mortar, and artillery rounds;
70 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs) and other vehicles;
Secure communications, electronic warfare detection systems,
Body armor, helmets, and other tactical gear;
Military medical equipment to support treatment and combat evacuation;
Explosive ordnance disposal and de-mining equipment; and
Satellite imagery and analysis capability.

In addition to the U.S.-produced short-range air defense systems the Ukrainians have been using to great effect, the United States has also identified and is helping the Ukrainians acquire additional, longer-range systems on which Ukraine’s forces are already trained, as well as additional munitions for those systems.

The United States continues to expedite the authorization and facilitation of additional assistance to Ukraine from our Allies. At least 30 countries have provided security assistance to Ukraine since the Russian invasion began.

In 2022, the Department of State authorized third-party transfers of defensive equipment from more than 14 countries, a number that continues to grow as Allies and Partners increase support to Ukraine.

Immediate Release
Oct 26, 2023

Biden Administration Announces Additional Security Assistance for Ukraine

Today, Oct 26, 2023, the Department of Defense (DoD) announced additional security assistance to meet Ukraine’s critical security and defense needs.

This announcement is the Biden Administration’s forty-ninth tranche of equipment to be provided from DoD inventories for Ukraine since August 2021.

This Oct 26, 2023 package includes additional air defense capabilities, artillery ammunition, anti-tank weapons, and other equipment to help Ukraine counter Russia’s ongoing war of aggression and fight for its independence and freedom.

This package utilizes assistance previously authorized for Ukraine during prior fiscal years under Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA) that remained after the PDA revaluation process concluded in June. This security assistance package is another visible signal of the United States’ continued commitment to supporting the Ukrainian people in the face of Russian aggression.

The United States remains committed to working with Allies and partners to provide Ukraine with capabilities to meet its immediate battlefield needs, and the Biden Administration calls on Congress to meet its commitment to the people of Ukraine by passing additional funding to ensure Ukraine continues to have what it needs to defend itself against Russia’s brutal war of choice.

Security assistance for Ukraine is a smart investment in our national security. It helps to prevent a larger conflict in the region and deter potential aggression elsewhere, while strengthening our defense industrial base and creating highly skilled jobs for the American people.

The capabilities in this package, valued at up to $150 million, include:

• Additional munitions for National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS);
• AIM-9M missiles for air defense;
• Stinger anti-aircraft missiles;
• Additional ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS);
• 155mm and 105mm artillery rounds;
• Tube-Launched, Optically-Tracked, Wire-Guided (TOW) missiles;
• Javelin anti-armor systems;
• More than 2 million rounds of small arms ammunition;
• Night vision devices;
• Demolitions munitions for obstacle clearing;
• Cold weather gear; and
• Spare parts, maintenance, and other ancillary equipment.

Maine is one of if not the safest state in the US. People felt no need to carry, open or otherwise. (except maybe in Portland)

That's probably all changed now.

I was just told by a female democrat voter that if nobody had a gun, then nobody would get shot.

I asked her if nobody included the police. She said yes.

I then asked her if nobody included criminals—murderers, rapists, thieves, etc. and she said of course.

I then asked her how she would get them to give up their guns.

Her reply?

Make their guns illegal!
