If some oppressive governmental power invaded your state and those next to you, what would you do? This was about ending slavery, but it was about the North invading the South to most individuals in the South. Slavery should have been dealt with when the constitution was penned. The reason it was not is that the power elites of that day were slave owners. Bankers in Philly and yes, NYC, supported this trade with lines of credit from which they profited enormously- the trade having only the overhead of the capture, payment on the African coast to Arab traders, with the ship’s captains or designates acting as what were called supercargoes. $500 in gold real US currency was quite a profit to take for example.
