A Massachusetts father and his two sons used a covert network of convenience stores and tax-shy scratch-off winners to defraud the lottery of more than $20 million, officials said.
Ali Jaafar, 63, of Watertown, had tried to pass off his winning streak as luck — but the lottery commission launched an investigation into the “factually or statistically improbable” results, according to the Boston Globe’s reporting on the saga Tuesday.

So...”statistically improbable” is sufficient to initiate and sustain an investigation of lottery fraud, but NOT sufficient to raise an election investigation?
Okay...got it!

“Whenever there’s big money involved, someone’s going to find a way to cheat.”
Reading the article, they didn’t defraud the lottery of anything.
They bought winners tickets at 85-90% of the face value, and then claimed the winning but off set the earnings by claiming fake gambling losses.
So the only ones they defrauded is the IRS.
They come here and are required to destroy us from within.
Indeed. At the point that they stopped the count in five separate places Biden pulling ahead was wildly statistically improbable.
“...A Massachusetts father, Ali Jaafar...”

Former Sen John F Kerry office intern
I don’t see how this defrauds the lottery.
The scheme defrauds the taxing authorities and provides monies to questionable people.
“I don’t see how this defrauds the lottery.
The scheme defrauds the taxing authorities and provides monies to questionable people.”
It seems like the taxing authorities are the questionable people these days.
I still do not see how this is illegal.
if you buy a lottery ticket and decide to sell or give it to me how is that illegal?
FTA——After the Jaafars were labeled “high frequency winners,” the Massachusetts State Lottery Commission launched an investigation that suspended the trio in May of 2019.
In the summer of 2020, both Yousef and Mohamed – the latter of whom previously showed promise as an intern for then-Senator John Kerry – were turned away at the lottery office.
Three years later, in November 2023, Mohamed, 33, pleaded guilty to a single conspiracy charge and was subsequently sentenced to six months behind bars, $964,000 in restitution, and two-year ban on lottery activities, the Boston Globe reported.
Ali and Yousef, 29, went to trial in December, and were both found guilty of one count of conspiracy to defraud the IRS, one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering and one count each of filing a false tax return, according to the US District Attorney’s Office in Massachusetts.
Ali was sentenced to five years in prison, and Yousef with 50 months, the DA said.
“Instead of using business savvy and skill to build a legitimate multi-generational family business, the Jaafars carried out a complex decade-long tax and lottery scam, building a vast network of co-conspirators to further their illegal activities,” said Joleen Simpson, Special Agent in Charge of the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigations in Boston.
“Tax violations have been erroneously referred to as victimless crimes, but it’s the honest law-abiding citizen who is harmed when someone tries to manipulate our nation’s tax system.”
Why can’t I ever think of clever scams and frauds?
That is the logical take on this. All of their winnings are legit, now figure out if the tax write offs are. How can they possibly do that? The number of man/they/them/her hours will cost more than the taxes lost. Then again, that is the game, they are playing with Monopoly money, and THEY always get THEIR cut.
Looks like the real winners were actually the ones defrauding gov..
They sold the tickets for almost face value without the need of paying taxes. Jaffar then claimed the prices and claimed that he bought soo many tickets that the total worth of those tickets was more than the wins. Since he owned a chain of stores, he obviously sold a lot of tickets, but claimed that most of them he bought himself.

The Case for Foreign National Deportation-Conditional citizenship is the only way to keep our Republic safe!
Frontpagemagazine ^ | 10-25-23 | Jason D. Hill
I might go further than DeSantis. I would call for the revocation of citizenship of naturalized persons who not only support Hamas, the Taliban, and communism but who, by whatever means and through whatever medium, communicate a deep hatred for the United States.
We are in the midst of a civilizational crisis. It is time to close ranks and revert to type – that is, revert to being patriotic Americans. The right to demean and belittle the United States is not the first right granted to foreign nationals when they are graciously allowed on American soil. Given the war on the West, and the attacks on American civilization on so many fronts, I would recommend that each foreign national student be thoroughly vetted for any anti-American sentiments before entrance into our universities.
They must sign a loyalty oath mandating them to defend—if called upon to do so—the reputation of the United States which has granted them refuge, an education, and a chance to make something of their lives which most of them were denied in their home countries. And let us not forget one thing: immigration is not a right; it is a privilege.
If we made naturalized citizenship conditional by literally requiring aspiring citizens to sign a pledge of allegiance and something on the order of a non-disclosure clause which prohibits them from making, not legitimate and rational criticisms of the state but rather, hateful invectives against our republic, we might see a reduction in the proclivities for defamation and destruction among many naturalized immigrants from certain groups who use and abuse this country, who become Americans or permanent residents for reasons of political and economic expediency—such as the 9-11 terrorists.
The time has come for great purges because in a civilizational war when the enemies announce themselves in the open and act with impunity, we must act in the spirit of self-preservation and exercise justice. Why should Americans live in fear of foreign nationals, supercilious young people, many of whom can barely write a term paper, but who want to dictate the terms of our domestic and foreign policy? By what right?
The recommendations laid out here call for a massive re-examination of our refugee and immigration policies. We not only need skilled and growth enhancing immigrants, we need patriots—folks who love America before they even arrive on her shores. We want immigrants who are assimilable and willing to adapt themselves to American culture and values and to grow into becoming Americans. People who, in the end, will see no distinction between their moral identities and their American identities. These are the vanguards and sentinels who will help us rebuild our crumbling civilization and defeat the nihilists and value-junkies from assuming ascendancy in our country.
If such recommendations seem harsh, look around you and consider the results. If you feel fearful of posting your value-laden views on social media for fear that you could be harmed by any sinister monster lurking in the shadows, ask yourself: Why? Why should our universities be the breeding ground for hatred, for bullying, for the celebration of the murder of innocent victims?
Why should the universities and their students contribute to the radicalism, anti-Semitism, and anti-Americanism at the expense of the American people? And why should the visitors to our country, or those on whom citizenship was bestowed as a gift, start dictating the terms of their visit, and be given the freedom to participate in rewriting the American narrative which then determines a redefined way of life for us? One alien to the essence of who we are.
When guests in your own country begin to make you feel as if you cannot understand the order of your home any longer, then, in the words of the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Schold—“Unfortunately, they cannot stay.”
