Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser flipped the script on George Floyd-era police reforms Monday by introducing new legislation to address skyrocketing crime in the nation’s capital.
Speaking from Ward Four, Bowser, a Democrat, rolled out the proposal deemed the Addressing Crime Trends (ACT) Now Act, which clarifies the distinction between a serious use of force and incidental contact with the neck, ensures officers can review their body-worn camera footage prior to writing their initial police report in certain circumstances, makes permanent clarification of vehicular pursuit and defines what information will be posted publicly related to officer discipline.
“MPD continues to be a leader in fair and constitutional policing across this nation. They continue to work every day to have and keep the trust of our city. And this legislation won’t change that. It will, however, support the department in dealing with some of the negative consequences of the Comprehensive Police Adjustment and Injustice Amendment Act. Some of the changes that were made just don’t match the daily practice of safe and effective policing,” Bowser said. “And whether that’s around incidental contact you can make with a person, or how officers can use their body worn camera footage to write reports or whether police are allowed to safely chase a criminal who’s right in front of them[.]” […]
The ACT Act aims to combat organized retail theft, address loitering around open-air drug markets and make it unlawful to use masks for committing criminal acts. …

“and make it unlawful to use masks for committing criminal acts”
This is what reform looks like? One can only laugh at this point.
Pretty tough to put the genie back in the bottle.
Heel, Bowser, heel.
You can cut down a forest in a day. But it takes decades to regrow.
Small village and toen Police department should be dissolved, though. Existing mostly to write tickets and generate revenue, is unnecessary and a waste of taxpayer money.
Be sure to raise the taxes BIGLY on everyone living in DC!
That’s a “reform”? Wearing masks in public to intimidate people has been illegal most places since...well...the KKK started doing that. Of course those laws don’t apply to Antifa, because...well...they get to do whatever they want. Assault and try to kill a journalist, well, I don’t Ngo. Masks, well Batman wears them to fight criminals such as Trump supporters.
Sure, because centralization and the diminishing accountability (and reliability) that comes with it is so much better. That’s how Obama thinks.
Trump mentioned the skyrocketing crime rates in DC during today’s speech. I did not know things were so bad in DC that even mayor Bowser is addressing them. I wonder if she will rename the street in front of the White Hiuse so that it is no longer painted with “Black Lives Matter”
“It is therefore vital that we pass the ACT Now Act, now. Act! Now!”
How about naming it “Honey, I destroyed the country” Act?
Throw Bow Wow a Milkbone!
Two little, too late. any sane police officer, fled, jurisdictions, like Washington DC that put these stupid policies in place, such as not different thing between a incidental brushing up against someone vs actual use of force, and denying offers the ability to watch their own BWC video to get some specific detail about the report.
I recall, reading some officers in areas where they were prohibited from, reviewing their own BWC footage to write a report, would simply just put in the report that they were dispatched to a certain location for whatever the initial report was Anne to review the body cam footage for clarification. They knew if they put in writing upon arrival, the encountered, say, three people, but at some point in the initial contact, the body camera showed a fourth person nearby, the leftists would throw them under the bus.
The elitists that want this and supported this is whining because its in thier back yard, F everyone else
I don’t see how any respectable peace officer could possibly want or even be led to serve anywhere near D.C.
I live in a town that had a PD and pretty much all they did was write tickets. They were dissolved by a 70% vote, in the years since the taxpayers have saved over $10 million and there always 2 dedicated sheriff patrols around the clock. More areas should do the same.
So long as it stays at that level of government and doesn’t get centralized further. Sounds like a good area where all citizens are law-abiding.
I’m sure you’re aware that DC is no parallel to that situation.
The “Protestors” in 2020 were destructive, violent storm troopers of the Democrat Party that destroyed private, public, and government property, and very nearly destroyed The White House - except for the many security and some public safety people who were injured fighting back against the storm troopers, at The White House perimeter.
