President Donald Trump does not support House Majority Whip Tom Emmer becoming Speaker of the House and has privately relayed that sentiment to his supporters, complicating an already convoluted leadership contest that currently has at least four candidates.
The Republican conference removed Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan as its speaker designee on Friday after he thrice failed to win the post in a floor vote. GOP Reps. Austin Scott, Ga.; Byron Donalds, Fla.; Kevin Hern, Okla.; Jack Bergman, Mich.; and Emmer have all since emerged as potential replacements for ousted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Several more are expected to jump into the fray.
McCarthy has endorsed Emmer, whose status as majority whip already places him as the highest-ranking would-be speaker in the conference after Majority Leader Steve Scalise left the race. Emmer has reportedly begun making calls to bolster support for his leadership bid, Politico reported. Trump's opposition could make it much more difficult for him to secure enough support.
Trump on Friday privately expressed his opposition to supporters. Citing persons familiar with the discussions, the outlet relayed Trump's concerns that Emmer did not hold a favorable opinion of him, had criticized him for the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot, and did not come to his defense amid the multiple criminal indictments he faces.
Both Jordan and Scalise have already failed to unite the conference for their own bids. With a narrowly divided lower chamber, any Republican would likely need the support of almost all the conference to secure the minimum number of votes for a majority in the chamber.
Emmer may already be short of the magic number, however, as one senior GOP source told Breitbart News on Friday that "[a]t least 12 Republicans are opposed to Tom Emmer under any circumstances."
"This thing is blowing up," the source said.

Assuming Democrats let this play out as an internal struggle among Republicans and don’t play king maker, the MAGA/Gaetz coalition is in the driver’s seat. They just need to be willing to wait it out.
There’s been much speculation about the RINOs making some kind of deal with the Democrats to either elect a RINO speaker or elect Jeffries himself. While I think that remains an outside possibility, I think it’s not as likely as some people think.
For one thing, the Democrats place a high premium on unity. Getting a significant number of Democrats to help the RINOs elect one of their own - even if it might make tactical sense - is not as easy as it sounds. The radical wing of the Democrats would not go along with it, and if Democrat leadership went ahead and did it anyway, that would be a very public demonstration of the kind of rift within the party, that they usually like to keep hidden behind closed doors.
On top of that, I suspect many in Democrat leadership think the speaker battle is hurting the Republicans, politically, and see no reason to end the standoff anytime soon. I think, in the long run, this is a miscalculation on their part, if the MAGA/Gaetz coalition eventually win, but I think they see it differently.
That looks like my dog!
Dog for Speaker!!
And the b@$$-turds did it in secret ... Behind closed doors!
Trump’s not a Republican, is he? He’s sui generis. Luckily. So interestingly, here he may be trying to continue the slow self-immolation of the R party. Can’t say it’s a bad plan.
Oh my. I said it the day Gaetz started this, and have ever since - this was an idiotic mistake by my favorite congressman that will end in disaster.
He first blocked the CR that contained spending cuts, so we ended up with a CR that has none. Then he sided with Democrats to oust McCarthy with no plan on who would replace him. This stopped all the individual spending bills that were working through Congress.
The end result will be a Speaker just as bad as McCarthy, if not worse, as well as the end of the individual spending bills and back to the Omnibuses, and Gaetz being sanctioned if not thrown out of Congress.
The Congress is too divided to believe a small element led by Gaetz can control it right now, and so an example will be made of him to not try again. We had a chance to get a more conservative Congress in 2022 but that got thrown away with some of the celebrity candidates that got pushed out front that made us look like clowns. This is just an extension of that.
Goodness. There is literally zero chance of that happening, I truly wish you understood. But have a good day. I think I’ll go read commentary somewhere else for a while, if its going to be like this here all day.
Reminds me of the TV ad Hello this is Debbie.
TRUMP NEEDS TO CAST ASIDE DONALDS, ALSO.
lol, seethe harder.
We’ll see. A lot of people have criticized Gaetz for going into this without a plan. But we don’t really know if that’s true. This particular battle is still playing out. I wouldn’t be too quick to declare it a failure until we see the end result.
Get real. Gaetz is already out there trying to offer himself up as a martyr, saying please please sanction me ASAP so this nightmare will finally end. He said he was offering up “a pound of flesh” but they want more than just a pound, and he knows it. All he’s done is sacrifice all the great concessions he got back in January, and weaken the party even further than it was.
Maybe one day people supporting him and Trump will wake up and realize all this tough talk and chaos is actually only making things worse. We need stuff DONE, by competent people, not rabble rousers who end up being thrown out of Congress, or thrown in jail.
What was that, Goldie? I didn’t quite copy. Could you repeat?
Funny, there you were in post 36 saying this needs time to play out, now in post 38 you’re ready to count your chickens. The guy hasn’t even been in office but for a day yet, and he’s already talking about CR’s with no spending cuts, which McCarthy had lined up but Gaetz blocked. Hopefully we’re on the right track, but nobody knows anything about this guy, really.
Thanks for the squish point of view. Now, aren’t you late for the Meatball rally?
