SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (FOX 2) - Children are increasingly gaining access to unsecured guns at home – often leading to fatal consequences. As a result, police are reminding gun owners to invest in gunlocks.
In June, a two-year-old Howell child accidentally shot himself with an unsecured gun; he was the son of a Dearborn police corporal. In August, a similar incident occurred involving an 8-year-old boy who gained access to an illegal, unsecured firearm. And just Thursday, another teenager accidentally shot himself in the face while at a family member's home in Canton, after discovering a gun.
Gunlocks are available and free at several law enforcement agencies in Michigan. To find an agency in your area, MDHHS shows an extensive list here.
"At the Southfield Police Department, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week you have access to gunlocks," said Deputy Chief Aaron Huguley. "There’s no limit on the request."
Southfield Police have also brought gunlocks out to the community by hosting gunlock giveaways.
On Friday, Fox 2 went to the Royal Oak Police Department to demonstrate how easy it is to obtain a gunlock – for free. Gun owners do not have to show any identification when requesting the device.
"Any level of protection that reduces the chances of a tragedy occurring is something we want to promote and make available to our citizens," said Lt. Richard Millard with Royal Oak police.
Gunlocks are also easy to use.
"Simply, you take the magazine out of the firearm –take all the ammunition out of the firearm– and you ultimately feed this gunlock through the barrel, and then you lock it on the other side," Huguley said.
Responsible gun owners don’t take chances when it comes to gun safety, according to law enforcement.
"You’re not going to always have these firearms on you, in your possession, so when you have to put it down… and you can’t fully secure it in a safe, you can feed a gun lock through it." Huguley continued. "It renders that fire arm inoperable. We advocate for responsible gun ownership and all the facets that go with it
Some of those free gun locks aren’t worth the money you didn’t pay for them. Buy a keyed gun safe and make sure you treat the keys with proper respect.
CAN
They give these away for free at the VA hospital.
Every handgun and rifle I purchased for the last thirty years came with a lock similar to the one pictured in the story.
Is it actually possible to buy a gun safe with an old school manual tumbler lock on it?
I strolled through the show room floor at a local dealer that had a large inventory a few weeks ago and every last unit on the floor was electronic which I absolutely do not want.
I have one with a tumbler. Not top of the line but serves my needs. Check on line.

Newsmax showed a VIdeo of a home invasion that was caught on their home camera- The camera was placed to view the living room/front door
a gang of 3 armed punks smashed through hte front door- late at night when everyone was asleep- they looked around htel iving room briefly, then you see one go into a side room and hear several gunshots, and hte punk runs out of the room screaming- the other 2 thankfully followed him out the door
Had the owner been forced to wake up, get out of bed, go to a locked cabinet or unlock a gun, then find ammo, load the gun and then fire- he and his wife wouldn’t be alive today- Thankfully the owner of he house had a gun near the bed, and ready for action
Thx for the “help.”
Avoid emergency access to firearms when you really need them. Use trigger locks.
When the FEEBS and the police go around with trigger locks on their firearms I’ll consider locking mine. Until then I consider all of my firearms (that is if i actually had any) loaded and available.
I don’t allow locks on my weapons. Every single time I ever needed one in my life, I always needed it NOW, not the 30 seconds it would take me to find my keys, another 30 seconds to get the lock off, chamber a round, and go to work. Locks always go straight into the trash when I get a new firearm.
It’s the USA, I suppose if you want a dial combination It’s just a matter of how much do you want to pay? Even in they’re difficult to find I daresay you might find a used one that has a combo lock. And it might be cheaper as well, as it is used.

Face it - if you are too lazy and stupid to keep your guns out of reach of children, you’re likely too lazy and stupid to use a gunlock too...
Unwanted access.....do these locks work on front doors? I don’t want criminals entering.
Criminals: immoral opportunists of self, private, or government employ.
Yes, but you have to look hard.
These guys give you a choice:

Do not be decieved, they are gaslighting you.
gun locks are mass produced and have 3 to 5 different versions per manufacturer, anyone with 5 or more locks will figure out they are keyed alike between them, it keeps it affordable and profitable especially when its a government contract or requirement (look at the un affordable healthcare act) and trigger locks can be manipulated and don’t always get secure enough, it is possible to move the lock and pull the trigger unless you put a block behind the trigger. And finally, an inaccessible firearm is worhtless when seconds count. just my 2 cents
