Let's see: Turkey is a member of NATO and, thus, an actual military ally of the United States. Something that, when all is said and done, Israel isn't.
After the U.S., Turkey has the second largest military in NATO. Among other things, there are some 90 or so B61 nuclear bombs located at the Incirlik Air Base, for use by the Turkish Air Force (with NATO permission, of course).
Perhaps you wouldn't be so "surprised" by world affairs if you would address your own ignorance. Although, I admit that opining about things of which one has no actual knowledge is pretty common around here.
Turkey's going wonky on account of these recent events, perhaps even de facto aligning itself with Iran as a consequence, would be a pretty big deal, and a pretty bad deal, and another grand accomplishment of the senile shithead who currently occupies the Oval Office.
