Well, he wrote about the last 1500 years, rather than including the tragic and existential threat to the Jewish people by the 3 wars with the Romans; other than that, and what I already mentioned (Holocaust and Jewish rejection of Torah), there was no great threat to destroy the people, but rather persecution and pressure to convert and conform to the local religion whether Christian or Moslem. That is the direct result of losing sovereignty in the land of Israel, and nobody’s fault but our forefathers. Fortunately, through seemingly modern miracles, Jews have a national homeland in the land of Israel again with sovereignty over a large portion of the land.
