Paris (AFP) – The global response to the bloodshed in Israel and Gaza has revealed deep divisions, with Western countries increasingly isolated on the global stage, a trend that has gathered pace since the outbreak of the Ukraine war.
On the day of Hamas' unprecedented attacks on Israel, Western countries condemned the militant group's onslaught in the strongest terms insisting "nothing justifies terrorism".
While some non-Western countries such as Argentina and India have shown solidarity with Israel, many others have simply called for de-escalation including regional heavyweights Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Morocco and Turkey, as well as global powers Russia and China.
Algeria, Iran, Sudan and Tunisia have openly expressed support for Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist organisation that controls Gaza.
Thousands of people across the Middle East gathered on Friday to demonstrate in support of the Palestinians, including in Jordan and Bahrain.
More than a year-and-a-half after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, a number of countries outside of the West's sphere of influence are refusing to bow to pressure from Ukraine's allies to support Kyiv.
"The two trends intersect in the narratives of the states of the 'global south'," said Hosni Abidi, director of the Geneva-based Center for Arab and Mediterranean Studies and Research.
The war in Israel "further deepens a fissure already visible over Ukraine".
This conflict "shows the extent of this divide in the majority of the countries of the South -- and particularly in Africa and in the Arab and Muslim world", he said.
In an increasingly fragmented world, all eyes are now on the fate of the Palestinian people.
The issue is especially fraught for those Arab states that have normalised relations with Israel while still proclaiming unwavering support for the Palestinians.

Raise your hand if you support what Hamas did on Saturday. Plenty of nations who are proud to support this action, some silently, and it's the usual suspects all around.
So, the world has self divided and Israel certainly isn't the reason for that, but this does help clarify who is on what side.

As far as I’m concerned the fact that Russia is staying clear of this conflict, despite throwing a bone to the Arabs, tells me that they’re quietly supporting Israel, since in the past, the world has come to the brink of nuclear war due to the Soviet involvement (particularly 1973)...and I don’t see that happening this time.

Liberal democracies (liberal in the classic sense) are pro-Israel.
Arab, totalitarian regimes and commies are all pro-Hamas, pro terror.
It’s all very predictable.
They need us more than we need them. But too bad we have a president who hates America as every s hole country hates her.
Okay, if they all care so much, let them figure out a place to relocate 2.1 million people. Siberia? Maybe a Gaza-sized Greek island?
That explains why Democrats are pro Hamas - especially the despicable filth Talib and Omar. The fact that those two are actually in Kongress makes me deeply ashamed of my country or rather what my country has become.

Behind the scenes they are all rooting for Israel because they all fear these sick bastards will come their way next.
