Bipartisan talk grows as GOP fails to find a speaker
AXIOS ^ | October 13, 2023 | Andrew Solender

Lawmakers in both parties are expressing growing openness, both in public and in private, to a bipartisan deal to elect a House speaker as Republicans are continually thwarted in their efforts to do it alone.

-----

What we're hearing: A bipartisan group of roughly ten House lawmakers is quietly holding "very" serious discussions, a moderate Republican involved in the discussions told Axios on the condition of anonymity.

"The question is who gets you to the largest minority of the majority," the GOP lawmaker said. "Is it Don Bacon, who gets 20 [GOP] votes and 200 Democrats? Is it French Hill who gets 100 votes from Republicans? And the fewer Republicans, the more dangerous this is – not just politically, but structurally."

____

"We're open to anything that's reasonable," said Rep. Maria Salazar (R-Fla.), a member of the moderate Republican Governance Group. "Bipartisanship is not a sin." Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.), a perennial bipartisan

This is the risk Republicans run

It is likely we end up with a coalition of Republicans and Democrats running a pseudo Republican for Speaker of the House instead of Kevin McCarthy.

McCarthy was to a certain degree trying to do the right thing under very difficult circumstances while keeping a razor thin majority satisfied.

May end up regretting his ouster. Worse, if McCarthy is reinstated (which is also likely) America First Republicans will have lost all leverage.

They are going to agree to letting a “Moderate” democrat be speaker. I hope Mr. Gaetz is proud of himself. We finally win back the House and then give it back to the democrats. And don’t give me the old ‘but McCarthy was a Rino’ crap he was a republican and set the agenda, decided what bills are moved forward and handled committee appointments. Now the democrats will set the agenda.

BACON CR SCORE 48%

MCCARTHY CR SCORE 54%

In addition, if Bacon cuts the deal with Democrats (something McCarthy refused to do to save his speakership), he is going to be voting with Democrats a lot more than he already does.

I don't think that's the outcome everyone cheering on Matt Gaetz was hoping for

Any Republican teaming with Democrats to elect Speaker must lost his or her job.

I was called every name in the book for suggesting that very thing.

(Well, that and I said Gaetz was a sociopath)

What about the eight Republicans who voted with every Democrat to overthrow a republican speaker?

There’s no difference between the RINOs and the Democrats, so if they’re set on a RINO, let the Democrats have the Speakership. Bunch of friggin’ surrender monkey RINOs.

Gaetz and his conspirators started this traitorous game with the Democrats.

This is the “bipartisanship” they are talking about.

Every indication is Jim Jordan does not have the votes either
There are at least 5 hard "no" votes and Rep. Greg Murphy (R-N.C. and a pretty solid conservative) is quoted in the article saying "it's going to be hard" for Jordan to win.

How many Dems will vote present or not attend? Typically, that's how these issues get resolved in exchange for some small promise.
If the Republicans can't agree on a Speaker from the Republicans in the House, then Trump gets nominated as the leader of the party, and those who oppose him are outed as RINOs to be primaried.

"Gaetz and his conspirators started this traitorous game with the Democrats."

It was an act of incorrigible stupidity--and that's being generous to Gaetz.

This is his legacy

The Republicans could easily do it. They just can’t have a RINO.

If the RINOs and Democrats want to OPENLY get in bed together....let them. It will make it that much easier to primary a bunch of the RINOs as the Assistant Democrats they truly are in 2024.

BS. Gaetz was always gunning for McCarthy. This was ALWAYS Gaetz endgame. The Speaker should not have to kiss the @$$ of a tiny few or one. The Speaker runs the whole House.

Gaetz is swine with no real interest in Republicans being able to govern. He gleefully collaborated with Democrats to put us in this situation. He likely handed the Democrats the House & maintained control of the Senate in 2024. Polling shows if elections were held today it would be Trump with a Democrat congress. Which means agenda 47 goes nowhere.

Matt is just getting started- just wait until Jordan is elected Speaker. They won’t wait out the Storm- they bring the Storm. They are two of the only men in congress with the Gonads and the resumes to bring down the global Pedo ring.
