House Majority Leader Steve Scalise will not secure the 217 votes needed to become the chamber’s speaker, according to sources.
The House conference has been delaying bringing the nomination to the floor for a full vote, as several members tell me Scalise cannot win.
“There are as many as 20 members opposing Scalise,” one source said, noting almost all are “Jordan and McCarthy supporters,” referring to Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, who lost to Scalise on a secret ballot for nomination to replace ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.
Publicly, Jordan is supporting Scalise, but privately he has told others he will enter the race as soon as Scalise withdraws.
House GOP Study Committee Chairman Kevin Hern, R.-Okla., and House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R.-Minn., are also discussing plans to enter the speaker's race after Scalise exits. Both are also preparing to challenge Jordan.
Jordan lost the vote to Scalise among House Republicans Tuesday, 113-99.
Jordan then pushed for a motion that the House GOP's nominee must win 217 votes before the matter is brought to the floor. That motion was rejected by the conference.
Hern appears to be the sleeper candidate. He’s solidly conservative, supports former President Donald Trump, and is liked by moderates who won’t back Jordan.
Emmer, meanwhile, is a moderate opposed by Trump, which likely would doom his bid for the leadership position.

While some of you see this process as broken, it is actually functioning exactly how the Founders wanted it to work. Leading, in government, shouldn’t be easy (or worse, guaranteed) for any involved. I also think that going through this process can be possibly helpful in healing the divisions in the Pub body.
Jesus came to divide.
Jesus came to unite.
How is that possible?
In Jesus case, the point of division and unification is one and the same. Any one know what it is?
Lets see if our politicians can get to one point of division and unification.....................
The Loony Left Media makes nuts out there think Moderates are “Conservative” when they are not.
I started learning this back in the 1970’s when it was Reagan versus Ford.
Now almost 50 years later I’m realizing even Reagan was better on conservative speechmaking than conservative policy in many ways Reagan didn’t dig his heels in on wasteful spending.
They cut a fake deal in the 1980’s that didn’t stop things.
It’s time once and for all for the Republican Party to be all out authentically Conservative.
We either get Conservative on wasteful spending or we die figuratively if not literally.
You liberal again. Go back to your basement in your parents home. I’m sorry your life turned out a disaster. Not my fault.
Won’t happen. The only way Hakeem Jeffries becomes speaker is if he wins a majority of the votes and that will only happen if some Republicans vote for him. That’s not going to happen.
There’s not a Republican who would ever vote for him. It would be political suicide, even for a RINO.
It’s more likely that.... another stolen election notwithstanding... the GOP will win in a landslide due to the massive FUBAR state of the economy that the Democrats have put us in.
Yeah we played that game in 2022 and the voters didn’t give us the wins especially the senate. I’m saying we will lose the house simply by redistricting changes. The chaos will just make it worse.
The ACU so what. They set a low bar I saw this with National Right To Life.
They talked “Partial Birth Abortion” made it the litmus test decades ago got all but one or two Republicans who were “Pro-Choice” otherwise supporting it.
Then NRL defined almost every Republican in the House as “Pro-Life” when they were not all “Pro-Life”.
In fact many dozens were actually “Pro-Choice”.
No offense, but it sounds like you have no idea what you're talking about.
1. The Speaker of the House is elected through a vote of the entire House of Representatives (Republicans, Democrats, and any others).
2. With 435 House members, the Speaker must get 217 votes (presuming all 435 are present and voting).
3. The Republicans have 221 seats in the House right now. The Democrats have 212, which means there are apparently two vacancies.
4. The Republicans just held a close-door vote to "nominate" their candidate for the House Speaker vote. Scalise won that vote, but he only got 113 votes in the process. 99 Republicans voted for Jim Jordan.
5. There's no rule anywhere that says every GOP House member must vote for the party's "nominee" for the Speaker vote, so the GOP will not have the votes to elect their own Speaker unless they get 217 of their 221 House members to support a candidate.
Scalise can't get those 217 votes because he's an establishment loser. The fact that he "won" the nomination vote should tell you everything you need to know about the Republican Party in Washington.
This kind of dysfunction is a GOOD thing.
Its’ a club they select people who are like them to run then deceive the voters...if not the Trump this sort of thing they could get away with...not any more.
you’re a prime example that liberals are DELUSIONAL
I just think they keep throwing out names, but I want to hear more about what they're going to do.
I believe I saw that Ken Buck is still staunchly pro-Cheney.
Interesting. I posited the other day it would be Scalise, Emmer or maybe Stephanik but my money was on Scalise. Hern sounds like a possibility if he’s acceptable to the moderates. I don’t think they will vote for Jim Jordan.
Scalise is less conservative than McCarthy.
Give Jim Jordan a chance.
Give the damn gavel back to Nanzi. At least she knows what the hell she is doing. Make Nanzi the Speaker and that will give the GOOBers more time to fight amongst themselves. They’ve just flat lost it.
WHY WOULD ANYONE SUPPORT A CRIMINAL FOR A POSITION OF SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE???
DRUG ACTIVITY
BANK FRAUD
PAYING A HIGH SUM TO HAVE A LAWYER GET YOUR CRIMINAL RECORD DOES NOT MAKE IT ALL GO AWAY
1 John 3
8 .....For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.
The vast majority of Americans don’t care about some internal squabble in Congress. In twelve months this whole thing will be a distant memory and will have almost no effect on the election. The end result may make a difference (i.e. Who ultimately gets elected) but not the process itself. This fight needs to happen and now’s the time.
Donna Brazile, like Scalise, is from the New Orleans area. Is there a connection to his attending the Biden inauguration. Didn’t Pence also attend?
