House Majority Leader Steve Scalise will not secure the 217 votes needed to become the chamber’s speaker, according to sources.
The House conference has been delaying bringing the nomination to the floor for a full vote, as several members tell me Scalise cannot win.
“There are as many as 20 members opposing Scalise,” one source said, noting almost all are “Jordan and McCarthy supporters,” referring to Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, who lost to Scalise on a secret ballot for nomination to replace ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.
Publicly, Jordan is supporting Scalise, but privately he has told others he will enter the race as soon as Scalise withdraws.
House GOP Study Committee Chairman Kevin Hern, R.-Okla., and House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R.-Minn., are also discussing plans to enter the speaker's race after Scalise exits. Both are also preparing to challenge Jordan.
Jordan lost the vote to Scalise among House Republicans Tuesday, 113-99.
Jordan then pushed for a motion that the House GOP's nominee must win 217 votes before the matter is brought to the floor. That motion was rejected by the conference.
Hern appears to be the sleeper candidate. He’s solidly conservative, supports former President Donald Trump, and is liked by moderates who won’t back Jordan.
Emmer, meanwhile, is a moderate opposed by Trump, which likely would doom his bid for the leadership position.

It wasn’t sarcasm but it was in jest.
Republicans could use someone with her powers of command.
Yet you like to cast stones to score political points.
Look up his Banking, Credit and Finance accomplishments yourself — he obviously was able to impress enough people who really know him to consider him for Speaker.
Ok, since you’re too blinded/lazy to look it up yourself:
“ Donalds began his professional career in 2003 as a credit analyst at TIB Bank. He was promoted to senior credit analyst in 2004, and later promoted to commercial credit manager, assistant vice president, and credit manager. Donalds left TIB Bank in 2007 and took a position as a portfolio manager at CMG Surety LLC. In 2015, he joined Wells Fargo Advisors as a Financial Advisor.[16]”
Last time I checked, we could certainly use someone with these skills in leadership positions in the House.
Also, because he is relatively new, he is probably the least compromised/corrupted of the bunch — kinda like Trump who had little political experience.
If Jim really wants it, all he has to do is tell us to light up the House switchboard as Rush would do on rare occasion. I guess enough people still listen to Bucket & Bloop or Travis & Tritt to have them get out that message.
BTW, Jordan does NOT oppose aid to Ukraine. He thinks Russia must be stopped, but he also opposes aid without a definitive mission (goals) statement from Biden, and without better accounting of funds sent. He was very clear about this in a recent interview (might have been with Greta Van Susteren? There’s so much going on it’s hard to always remember who interviewed who!)
I want to see Pooty knocked back on his ass, and I can support Jordan’s position. I suspect 90% of Ukrainians would, too, especially when it comes to accountability.
P.S. It’s ironic that we have FReepers here who don’t “get” the connections between the war in Ukraine, and Iran’s role in barbarism in the ME.
> With the slender GOP majority in the best of times why would the Democrats allow a peaceful resolution of the crisis in the House? They voted to get rid of McCarthy and won’t be kind and of high character for the good of the country during the Israeli and budget extension crises.
If we can’t govern without the help of leftist Dims, the GOP is in serious trouble.
House Republicans need to get their act together one way or another. Jeffries/Pelosi is making a play for the GOP reps who are in districts that Biden won. Pelosi may be a monster but she’s an EFFECTIVE monster... the GOP keeps this bumbling up and we’ll be seeing a Speaker Jeffries. This is a real threat.
Not impossible at all.
It would be 24/7 "Amnesty Now!".
I think Reagan felt Russia was the greater threat, especially once he got the economy taking off, and he got most of the defense spending he wanted in those bills...
“Why are they pushing this Hern guy?”
I recall that he’s been endorsed by other true conservatives prior to this, in other situations. Seems to be the most conservative of the four. I don’t know much about him myself.
RE: If we can’t govern without the help of leftist Dims, the GOP is in serious trouble.
Good observation.
Sadly true today. That “surge” of high character voters going to the polls in that last off year election didn’t happen and we couldn’t overcome the vote fraud.
We were supposed to have the strong House majority due to voter backlash.
Trump was very weak in dealing with her, and then when the Dems took over she had free rein (with a totally non-existent Biden).
Trump should have had her censured and out of there the moment she tore up the SOTU on live TV. But despite his bluster, he was obviously intimidated by her.
We don’t have anybody intimidating on our side.
Russia was Communist during Reagan’s time. It’s an authoritarian state now, but they’re not Communists. Which is precisely why the left hates them.

Not bad.
Jim Jordan’s Liberty Score is: A 94% (15 yrs in DC)
Tom Emmer’s Liberty score is: D 69% (7 yrs in DC)”
BREAKING: Leading Candidate For House Speaker To DROP OUT After Failing To Garner Support
“The race for House Speaker took a harrowing turn in the late morning hours Thursday, with sources telling Newsmax that Congressman Steve Scalise (R-LA) is expected to drop out of the race after he concluded he would be unable to secure the necessary 217 votes.
The Majority Leader appeared on a glide path to the top job following a meeting of the GOP caucus on Wednesday where insiders say his whip operation collected support from a sizable majority over Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) who is running for Speaker with the endorsement of former President Donald Trump. On Thursday morning, however, at least 10 Republican congressmen confirmed they would not back “Status Quo” Scalise on the floor for a vote where he could only afford four dissidents.”
Or Chip.
What the? I think you need to coordinate your naps a little better. Do you have a link to my post stating this, because I don’t recall saying that. In fact I don’t think I posted to you before today.
Yep, the Evil Empire.
Jim Jordan!!
Trump should have had her censured and out of there the moment she tore up the SOTU on live TV."
Ridiculous. A failed censure vote from the minority party? It would just make her look stronger.
You people who piss and moan that President Trump has to be the one to extract and execute every scintilla of negative karma that bad people like Nanzi have coming to them, it's absurd. It says far more about you than it does about President Trump.
Does that even happen in real life? Do you have enemies that have negative karma coming to them and you rely on someone else to get it done?
Nanzi got what she had coming to her and more when David DePape brained her husband, right on the heels of Paul's DUI, totalling a 170K Porsche.
So what did Nanzi do after Paul's DUI? She grounded Paul, leaving him at home where DePape got to him, instead of Paul being at the country club as usual; and if he had been at the club, DePape would have broken into an empty mansion. Instead that ibogaine goon DePape hit the jackpot literally lofl.
Nanzi was responsible for getting Paul skullf---ed. If that ain't karma, you ain't awake.

Indeed, Jordan clearly doesn’t trust the warmongering deep-staters running the Kremlin. He clearly knows that Russia is as trustworthy as a group of hungry Hyenas surrounding a wounded newborn Antelope.
The Hamas attack against civilians in Israel is evidently a deflecting move that Russia desperately needs to get some breathing room in Ukraine. It’s being co-organized by the Russia-Iran alliance. Russia wants America to divert more of its energy and resources elsewhere than principally in Ukraine.
Russia-Iran know full well that America will never abandon Israel, and that we’ll have to dig further into our resources. We can do it easily though. Russia is betting on that we can’t... let’s not let Russia win that bet!
