Best of McClellan: The Important People and the day the presidential debate rolled into town

On Oct. 11, 1992, St. Louis hosted the first three-way presidential debate in U.S. history, with Ross Perot, Bill Clinton and George Bush squaring off.

As millions of Americans watched on TV, about 600 others - mostly campaign workers, local dignitaries, reporters and Washington University students - got inside the Washington University Field House for the 94-minute debate.

Bill McClellan was on the scene, and here was his report.

ABOUT AN hour and a half before the presidential debate, August Busch III walked into the Anheuser-Busch hospitality tent next to the Washington University Field House.

A murmur passed through the crowd. ''Who's that?'' asked a Secret Service agent with an audio cord sticking out of his ear.

''That's the important Mr. Busch,'' said a local cop, differentiating the brewery head from the president of the United States.

I think that was the town Hall in Richmond.

Where the guy Rush described as “that idiot with the pony tail” asked for the candidates to “treat us as your children”.

Looking back, Perot might have changed the trajectory the USA and the West has been on for the last 30 years.

He probably would have gotten the same Deep State subversion as Trump, but NAFTA and other “Free Trade” BS would have been killed for a few years.
