A climate researcher risks losing university post for refusing to fly home
CNN ^ | October 4, 2023 | Issy Ronald

Climate researcher Dr. Gianluca Grimalda says that he risks losing his post at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy in Germany for refusing to use a plane as a means of transport back from Papua New Guinea.

Grimalda plans to return to Germany from his research trip without flying in order to reduce his carbon emissions by 90%, and instead intends to travel using ferries, coaches, trains and cargo ships.

However, he said the institute gave him three days notice to return by October 2 which would have forced him to fly, according to a statement issued by climate group Scientist Rebellion.

Grimalda told CNN that the Kiel Institute told him to “expect a second warning/request to show up in Kiel traveling by plane,” after he failed to return and that they “will then issue the letter of redundancy” when he fails to show up a second time.

Wouldn’t the plane leave the same carbon footprint whether or not he was on it? Of course, if he had just taken the plane, there would have been no stunt.

Bogus.

My speculation...

They have been telling him to come home for months and finally delivered a three day ultimatum.

The researcher's low-carbon travel drama is just to attract the attention of privately funded Climate Emergency labs where political propaganda is more important than research.

China left the Paris Climate Accords 3 months a go. China had made a lot of pledges to limit CO2 emissions by 2035

Good for him for living up to his convictions. Any reduction by him though will be more than offset by the bureaucrats flying off to the next climate change summit.

He’s doing this because his research is for sh!t and likely everything else he does for his employer is the same. Looks like the university finally got fed up with him. He probably doesn’t even have any ‘research’ from his trip.

“””Grimalda says that he risks losing his post....in Germany for refusing to use a plane as a means of transport back”””

Think for a minute, some guy COULD lose his job in Germany because he doesn’t want to use a plane which is faster, to get back to work.

How did he turn something that isn’t even a story, into an international story? I guess we have to stay tuned to learn if he gets back to work on time.
