I remember that some company, maybe in the Philippines was counterfeiting bolts many years ago. Bolts that were sold as Grade 12s were actually more like cheap Home Depot grade but with the markings for higher grades and properly plated. I think some planes crashed because these bolt sheered in critical places. This is bad business and the perps need life sentences.

I don’t think the bolts sheered. They actually sheared. Look it up in yer Funk & Wagnall’s. You’ll only get a B+ for today’s lesson, instead of the A you would’ve gotten.

There were recycled electronic components being cleaned up, repainted and sold as new that ended up in aviontics some years back. They were coming from China.
