My family and I were living in the South side in 1968, when King got shot. The Blackstone Rangers federation of street gangs would not let the rioters into their neighborhood, where we were perhaps the only white family in residence. Not because of concern about us (we were not on anybody’s radar), but because it was their turf and they demanded it be respected as such.
Those days are gone. So are the Blackstone Rangers. More’s the pity.
