Now-former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was stripped of his gavel on Tuesday afternoon via roll-call vote on Rep. Matt Gaetz's (R-FL) motion to vacate the chair, pursuant to rules agreed to by McCarthy in order to clinch victory in his drawn-out race to become speaker in January.
By a vote of 216 to 210, the historic motion prevailed as presiding Rep. Steve Womack (R-AR) declared "the resolution is adopted...the office of Speaker of the House of the United States House of Representatives is hereby declared vacant."
The Republicans joining Gaetz in his motion to vacate were Reps. Biggs (AZ), Buck (CO), Burchett (TN), Crane (AZ), Good (VA), Mace (SC), Rosendale (MT

I think folks are going to find out it’s much harder to cut
spending and get things under control, as long as the majority
is such a razor thin one.
We’d all like to see $1-2 trillion lopped off our national
debt each year, but until welfare gets the true overhaul it
requires to do it, good luck.
There’s simply too much pork in every district’s future,
and no one wants to be seen as the guy that stopped the
flow of those desired federal dollars.
Because the Dems vote in lockstep no matter what. No matter what.
Posted this earlier, but she accompanied DiFi's body back to California and is remaining for the funeral. But we all know how the old battle ax would have voted.
Good one!
AND RULES OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

Rule 1 Clause 8
(As far as limited powers for the Speaker Pro Tem there are limitations but only when he is serving due to illness of the speaker)
(b)(1) In the case of illness, the Speaker may appoint a Member to perform the duties of the Chair for a period not exceeding 10 days, subject to the approval of the House.
(3)(A) In the case of a vacancy in the Office of Speaker, the next Member on the list described in subdivision (B) shall act as Speaker pro tempore until the election of a Speaker or a Speaker pro tempore. Pending such election the Member acting as Speaker pro tempore may exercise such authorities of the Office of Speaker as may be necessary and appropriate to that end.
(Legal scholars are going nuts right now interpreting what that means but on face value, it looks to me like the Pro Tem has the authority of the speaker. However, I did not stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night sooo....)
Yuck. Would have serve her right if 1/2 the audience got up & left the room.
Great post.
Yeah, I hear ya. They all do it.
What about TX Rep. Louis Gohmert for house Speaker?
I live in Florida and have for over 60 years red MAGA Conservatives are not dominate in the state, DeSantis winning re-election by 20% was a highly unusual thing most elections in Florida are 1-2% margins of victory
Could be your tinfoil hat is to tight, just guessing
All that is true but the problem is who can get the necessary votes to become speaker and how long does it take, meanwhile the Democrats, media and many Republicans nonstop broadcast how dysfunctional the Republicans are, they can’t govern, etc.
It’s a short term win right now getting rid of McCarthy but a year from now at the next election it could be a very different story
This will have no bearing on next year’s election one way or the other.
I hope you’re right but I doubt it, it will be a campaign issue for every Democrat and in split districts could easily decide who controls congress
A fair number are paid plants
I’ve watched them for years
National review folks and congress staff and GOPe ops
In the old past some even bragged about coming thru for the joint
Don’t let them fool you
They are republican party tricksters and they are paid to infil here and other social media etc
Amen!!
Thank you!
Yes, Gaetz and the Republic had a victory, it may or may not be short term.
But something had to be done. Inflation is spiraling up. Inflation is dangerous and can easily be the end of a republic.
Remember the Weimar Republic?
I certainly remember the Weimar Republic.
The next 30-60 days will tell a lot, if we get chaos over who will be the next Speaker and/or the Government shuts down for some period of time, then this move by Gaetz won’t be good.
The issue now is the solution to this problem requires pain from the public in the form of high interest rates and budget cuts, neither of which the politicians from either side want to deal with, which means nothing will get done until it’s a real crisis.
The other issue is the public has little to no confidence in both parties to tell them the truth.
It’s certainly a ballsy move by Gaetz, there is very little middle ground, either will be a hero or total loser, I give him credit for trying.
