Army War College Report Predicts Mass Casualties in Near-Peer Fight Against [Russia] - Analysis
Substack ^ | Oct 2, 2022 | Simplicus the Thinker

A few weeks ago the U.S. Army War College released a paper which was an urgent call for the U.S. armed forces to adapt to the modern style of warfare being innovated in the Ukrainian conflict.

The paper made the rounds due to some startling admissions, which we’ll get to. But what’s most important to understand is that it represents a general shift in thinking that’s propagating throughout the entire sphere of the Atlanticist West, and was released in concert with several other key thinktank pieces and policy shift announcements from the EU, NATO, etc., which holistically represent an internal panic deep within their structures, resulting in an urgent need for a strategy change.

And this point is one of the central themes of the War College paper itself. Its opening preamble can be summarized in a single sentence: the current time period marked by the Ukrainian conflict represents the largest “inflection point” in 50 years of military history. The authors believe that the Yom Kippur War of 1973 was the previous most impactful inflection point. They recount how the U.S. army was demoralized by its experience in Vietnam, and inability to meet its objectives, followed by Israel almost losing to a Soviet-equipped Egypt in the Yom Kippur War.

Did you read the article?

About Troop comparisons

Then there is ammo

This war has basically disarmed the UK army whose Defence Chief just stated they have no more weapons to give……and reduced stocks in the other NATO countries to a few days of fighting! Ginning up military production will take a year or more…even from the US

NATO has basically been fooked by Biden and Zelensky…yet the demands continue.

I’m more worried about how the US Troops will do against the Chinese within our border, and on the Canadian border just waiting orders.

Thanks for the summary. I agree with your decision to post this not because the analysis is surprising but because it’s good to keep an eye on how the attention paid to potential conflict with Russia continues and develops. Someone dismissed this as a student article, but it’s actually by a lieutenant colonel and a professor.

I’ve been posting about this for years and it is one of the benefits for the West coming out of this war, the seeing of this and the overall consumption of men, ships, air, weaponry, fuel, etc. if we have a major war with China for instance where all the stops are pulled out.

I have been calling it bench depth, where Divisions are being overrun and ammo and food not reaching the front, large units are being cut off and on their own, chaos and uncertainty everywhere on the front, can our military supply it, and can our soldiers hold up mentally and emotionally.

“Did you read the article?”

The casualty rates in the article (3,600 per day) were not from some model of a war with Russia - they were generic planning factors for a high intensity conflict, out of Field Manual (FM) 4-0, Sustainment Operations (footnote 12 in the article).

The reality is that Russian forces arrayed against NATO have been cut by 4/5ths, to feed into the Ukrainian meatgrinder. NATO has gone on a military spending spree, and the addition of Finland and Sweden are far from trivial. Finland fields the largest Artillery force in Europe, and Sweden will bring effective control over the Baltic Sea.

Russia has burned through the better half of its gear, while for the first year The West was basically providing old Warsaw Pact leftovers to Ukraine. The Western platforms that been provided are mostly old Vietnam or Gulf War era stuff, that was no longer on operational status.

NATOs Operational forces have grown since the start of the war in Ukraine, and are more forward deployed. All our modern stuff is fully on hand, except for 155mm Artillery ammo and shoulder fired ATGMs and SHORAD (which have largely already done their work attritting Russian platforms ahead of time.

The initial shock and awe opening salvos of a full conflict with NATO would blast Russian conventional forces into pieces, before they could inflict mass casualties on the ground - So fast it would make their heads spin.

The same folks who predicted 40,000 casualties in Desert Storm.

Red or blue state is irrelevant really. Go by county.

I believe you will find that during the Napoleonic Wars, the British had conscription into the active Militia -- meaning it was called into full time service, but not liable for service on the continent. Each county, and parish, was given a quota of conscripts, to be selected by lottery, and there was a "buy out" provision, meaning for X in pounds "£x" the recruit could buy his way out of service. But it also meant that local officials who were opposed to the war, or perhaps supported the war, but thought it was being conducted by idiots, could pay the £x for all the conscripts they were obligated to produce, and thus spare their young men from conscription.

I saw post 86 as a list of facts except for the last sentence of educated opinion, which is pretty darn close to being fact.

You skipped over the entire post of facts to make an irrelevant wisecrack.

Your reality is not where facts dwell.
The first para:

“The reality is that Russian forces arrayed against NATO have been cut by 4/5ths, to feed into the Ukrainian meatgrinder. NATO has gone on a military spending spree, and the addition of Finland and Sweden are far from trivial. Finland fields the largest Artillery force in Europe, and Sweden will bring effective control over the Baltic Sea.”

No need to discuss further.

Some ridiculous ignorance inspires no response. The “wise crack” was, indeed, gratuitous.

They predicted more than that.
It was a very sobering time.

The Rada just raised the conscription age for men to 65.
Senior officers- to 70.
Nothing says winning like drafting an army of senior citizens.

They’re not going to outrun the artillery fire, are they.
