Tim Wakefield, one of the masters of the knuckleball pitch who won two World Series titles with the Boston Red Sox, has died. He was 57.
it was revealed earlier in the week Wakefield was battling brain cancer.
"Our hearts are broken with the loss of Tim Wakefield," the Red Sox said on Sunday.

This is absolutely horrible news. I loved watching him pitch. Prayers to his family.
I think he was a great pitcher...But, I do not know why he revealed the information without permission...

A lot of people don’t remember that Wakefield started out with the Pirates. Had a great year in 1992, then lost the feel for the knuckler and was getting hit hard - a knuckleball pitcher has no plan B. The Pirates were deconstructing so they dumped him. Their loss.
Schilling said he wanted people to pray for Wakefield. I don’t know if he knew that Wakefield didn’t want this publicized.
A real sportsman would almost never intentionally bean another player. it’s just bad sportsmanship.
but i think wakefield is in the top 10 all-time hit batters list. knuckleballs will knuckle

I think he thought because the end was near that he should ask for thoughts and prayers. I understand that…but the family was so private about it, that should have been done in a personal call.
Just found out that another well-known New England athlete, Russ Francis of the New England Pats, was killed yesterday in a plane crash.
