When it comes to politics, Trump thinks tactically. You win skirmishes that way. But wars are won by thinking far ahead, strategically. This “birdbrain” stunt was not a good strategic move.
Why isn't it good? It elevates Haley at the obvious expense of DeSantis, which is exactly what he's trying to do at the moment. Maybe that's a mistake, but that's his campaign strategy.

or maybe a desantis level dirty trick because she looked so much better than him at the debate (even after he had his make up freshened up)
