Like much of Washington, the Biden White House was caught off guard Saturday morning when House Speaker Kevin McCarthy abruptly reversed course and announced that he would bring a clean bill to fund the government for the next 45 days.
But aides weren’t terribly surprised. After all, they had assumed the government shutdown showdown would end this way at some point — with the main question being whether McCarthy would take his lumps before or after the funding deadline.

Let’s send all the Democrats to the front lines in Ukraine.
We are not at war with Ukraine.
We have never been at war with Eurasia.
If I’m in Congress, I’ll vote yes to fund Ukraine. But I’ll do so reluctantly. I’ll want to see a plan to win the war. Otherwise, It’ll be my last vote to support the government of Zelensky.
Looks like credit goes to MTG for holding the line here. Should have gone after the DOJ too but at least there was a little bit of fight and unity from the Repukes.
Of course..the money laundering operation needs to continue..after all, to ensure the yachts checks don’t bounce this needs to be signed pronto
FTA-——There was one major concession the administration would have to accept: The House funding measure did not include aid for Ukraine, a priority for President Joe Biden. It was also a blow to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who met with Biden and lawmakers last week to once again make the case for additional funds for Kyiv’s defense against Moscow.
But inside the administration, aides attempted to downplay that exclusion. “Speaker McCarthy has stated his support for aid to Ukraine,” the White House official said, adding that they expected him to bring a separate bill to the floor “shortly.”
How much of that was spin, wishcasting, or solid intel was hard to tell.
No one in the White House would say they received an actual assurance from McCarthy that he’d bring a measure up for a vote. Instead, two administration officials noted that McCarthy has never himself said he wouldn’t support aid to Ukraine.
The view from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. was that the speaker couldn’t include it in a government funding bill, lest he incur a full bore insurrection from within his party. But that didn’t mean he couldn’t push it as a separate matter
You’re ignoring the fact that Ukraine is the biggest rat money laundering op History.
All CongressCritters will vote on a Separate Bill, thus not hiding Ukraine Funding
in a CR. And go on record for that specific vote.
Let them ALL go on record for funding Ukraine.
Their voters will hold them accountable.
Hmmmm, it is obvious that the term “surrender monkeys” will have to pass from the French (who never really deserved it) to the Republicans (who exemplify the phrase).
Eff McRinocrat and everyone who agrees with him. Please, God, send us some real men and women.
Anyone that thinks another election can solve this is naive.
You were also big on COVID. Somehow I identify you with the people who were constantly promoting their own daily update threads. I’m a little fuzzy on this….
That is not how this works.
McCarthy did NOT bring this bill to the floor over the majority of his own caucus. He got a GOP majority by extracting Ukraine money.
The exact same reality will appear with any separate Ukraine money bill. It can’t go to the floor without majority GOP support or McCarthy would be passing it over the majority of his own caucus and that will lose him the Speakership.
This was somewhat masterful by McCarthy, but no one is going to change their mind and support Ukraine funding on the GOP side, and the Speakership is held by the GOP. He cannot go over the head of that majority.
This could end the war.
Yes we are.
We are fighting them for American Taxpayer dollars.
“It is being rumored that deal has been struck privately between McCarthy and Democrats to bring a separate bill on Ukraine. Funding to the floor soon.”
A majority of the GOP members oppose further funding.
There will be no bill on the floor to vote on.
Look on the bright side, at least they dropped the “ cheese eating” before the “ surrender monkeys”.
Nothing can get in the way of their bipartisan highly profitable orgy of mass murder.
