Amara Roberts was throwing a friend’s birthday party the night she accidentally overdosed. She swallowed a pill she thought was MDMA. Then she lost consciousness.
This was about a year and a half ago, long before Amara, 17, knew illicit pills of all varieties were suddenly carrying traces of fentanyl, a deadly opioid up to 50 times as potent as heroin.
There was no Narcan around. No one called 911.
“Nobody knew what to do,” she said. “We were all scared of getting caught.”
Amara didn’t make it to the hospital that night; medical care is expensive — sometimes too expensive for her family, she thought. The pill made her sick — something she didn’t share with her mom right away — and when she finally regained consciousness, she decided to go through the torment alone, crawling on all fours to the bathroom where she threw up “straight acid and bile” several times an hour.
Shame and fear washed over Amara when, a few days later, a drug test came back positive for fentanyl. Her mom Jessica Roberts didn’t know about the drug test but could tell something was wrong. She tried to quiz Amara for information.
But Amara couldn’t stop thinking about the drug. It wasn’t as easy to find fentanyl as it is now, so sometimes she’d travel downtown to buy pills. Eventually she found dealers who’d deliver to her home.

Drugs are bad, Mkay?
I know we don’t officially declare war anymore. Our last officially declared war was World War II.
But I wish legally we could declare war on these drug cartels. Legally speaking. , maybe we could take stronger actions against them if we were officially legally at war with them.
I don’t expect it to happen and I’m aware there could be some repercussions if we were on Mexican territory with our military.
But our military could certainly be on our own border, and disrupt these drug cartels and illegal aliens, and other criminals who are up to no good.
Medical care? Too expensive for her family. Fentanyl delivered to her door step? Totally in her family's budget. What a kid!
"Treatment" after the fact on opioid dependence is nothing, nothing at all, compared with prevention.
Dealers (we called them pushers at one time in the past), deserve the lengthiest of strong sentences.
DAs and other in govt who have little qualm with illegal drug sales or promotion could benefit from some quality reflection time in the slams.
The border needs to be sealed, airtight. 'Mules' need to be prosecuted and hear the jail doors "clank" shut.
Illegal aliens, and their families, should be gifted a flight back to their countries.
Anyone promoting drugs to kids (however obliquely,) needs a character-building sentence in in stony lonesome.
For pity sake, these are our children. They deserve whatever safety and security we can provide.
what "treatment" they refer to I have no idea....except just say NO to drugs and punish people that do.
Maybe we can get our new Mexican friendlies to bring Narcan with them?

drug overdose is now by far the leading cause of death in younger people. It is also the largest cause of “accidental’ deaths, more than all car accidents, murders, guns, suicides, industrial accidents, drowning, etc.. together!
Yet, Bidet is promoting legalization or decriminalization of drugs and drug dealers!

I happen to meet a doctor who specializes in drug overdoses and drug treatments.
He told me that Narcan is actually quite bad for treating drug overdoses. The problem is that Narcan dissipates a lot faster than Fentanyl.
The kid gets sick, is given Narcan, feels better, goes home to sleep and never wakes up as he get sick again after Narcan dissipates.
Apparently, Fentanyl overdoses should be treated by several, spaced, Narcan doses, but they rarely are, mostly because people who administer Narcan usually do not know.
The administration gives away Narcan for free to everybody, but that most people who use it have no idea how to use it!

And, as an aside, when I got my HD and returned to civilian life and college, the nation was a different place than when I went in 4 yrs earlier.
