CHICAGO — A Cook County judge rejected a prosecutor’s request to jail a Chicago man who allegedly shot a dog as a threat to public safety on Monday. Instead, Judge Mary Marubio sent Darrick Bender, 19, home with a nighttime curfew and orders to stay away from the dog’s owners, court records show.
Chicago police initially responded to a ShotSpotter gunfire detection alert in the 5000 block of South La Crosse late Sunday night. Before they arrived, dispatchers radioed that a 911 caller reported that a man had just shot his dog one address away from where the ShotSpotter indicated a gun had been fired, according to a Bender’s CPD arrest report.
The officers saw two men matching the descriptions of the suspects and tried to talk with them. But the men ran, and two officers chased one of them, allegedly Bender.
The arrest report said Bender ran behind a home and threw a backpack over a fence before the cops caught him. The backpack contained a loaded 9-millimeter handgun equipped with a laser sight, loose ammunition, and two 50-round drum magazines, according to the report.

Shows how selective a fedeal gun ban would be.
Deep within our minds, we know what we’re going to have to do about this.
Cashless bail isn’t the issue. The guy should be held in jail, whether or not he can afford (or get someone else) to pay a bond.
The article doesn't say why the thug shot the dog but assuming it was for no justifiable reason, that would be the best advice this dirt-bag judge could give this punka$$ if that had been one of my dogs.
Better stock up on shoe polish and hair product. Then it’s time to bring back the wild West.
I’m ready
This type of judicial idiocy is encouraging more crime. Criminals have complete contempt for the system now. Especially if they are one of the protected groups. Down we go as a country.
So you think if I pop a stray pit that comes to my house where my grand children are playing in the yard ... that I should be held in jail?
I think the the judge acted like he had some sense...
The 2nd amendment is for everyone ...or ..no one.
The example you give doesn’t match this incident. My point was more about cashless bail. If someone is a flight risk or a danger to other people they should be held in jail, I don’t think the ability to post bail should allow them out.
“So you think if I pop a stray pit that comes to my house where my grand children are playing in the yard ... that I should be held in jail?”
That depends. If the dog was not acting aggressively toward your grandkids you could be in trouble with the law. Not all dogs are Cujo.
Therefore, the top 3 three most dangerous dog breeds, each responsible for the most amount of fatal dog bite attacks, are American Pit Bull Terrier, Rottweiler, and German Shepherd.Jul 23, 2023
Not Cujo’s, just viscous aggressive breeds.
so it likes criminals and guns, but hates dogs... is that it???
New laws, especially gun laws, always sound like a good idea until it comes time for somebody to enforce them.
“He a good boy.”
Kinda like all blacks are bad, huh?
Some neighborhoods pretty much have a pit of two per household. It’s the only way...and no guarantee...that you can leave the house without being robbed. It’s probably not uncommon for thieves to preemptively take out watchdogs.
You sound like you are condemning an entire breed because of the actions of a few. I have news for you: ALL dogs have the potential for aggressiveness, just as all HUMANS have the potential for aggressiveness. That does not give license to slay them for their potential.
makes sense...
As for trouble with the law ... there are leash laws and control laws.
Keep your dog at your house and your gun in your holster, there won't be a problem.
“ability to post bail”
Of course I didn’t read the article ...just the excerpt ..
but what exactly do you want the guy held in jail for?
“A pit on my property is deemed a dangerous animal and will be dispatched.”
If it is merely on your property and you “dispatch” it, you will be arrested.
