Johnny Mims, a band director at Minor High School in Alabama, is accusing Birmingham police of using excessive force against him after he was shocked with a stun gun three times after officers say he refused to comply with orders while they attempted to clear the field...
The incident occurred at P.D. Jackson-Olin High School in Birmingham during "fifth quarter" – a tradition that originates at Historically Black Colleges and Universities where school bands face off, taking turns to play music after a football game comes to an end.
"It is a big cultural thing that happens amongst bands....
...Body camera footage released by BPD shows officers attempting to clear the stadium following the game and as they approach Mims and ask him to tell the band to stop the music, he repeatedly says, "Get out of my face."
"Cut it! We got to go," a sergeant says.

Local Miami Florida media is hyping this... But the body cam video appears to show the police who are arresting the perp are also black.
I’ve never heard of cops clearing a field after a football game. Maybe that in itself speaks volumes enough about the situation.
I don’t think this had anything to do with race. It was just some over-eager cops wanting to throw their weight around.
They could have let him finish the one piece. This is apparently a local tradition, band members are generally good kids and not likely to be violent as they pack up their instruments and leave, and the cops slowed things down more by creating a scene than by just letting the band play a song.
Instead of doing something constructive, the cops are breaking up a “battle of the bands?” Maybe somebody was going to attack them with a tuba?
But it actually has nothing to do with race (the cops were black too) but just with bad policing.
Was there a problem after the game? Any reason the cops needed to break tradition and stop the music? Regular city cops or school district cops? School district cops should know the after game band routine.
This is a summation of where we are today. The Band Director knows he is breaking the law with the noise ordinance. He is being told to start ... alright you had your fun now turn it off and tell the kids to go home. The Band Director is not going to be told what to do and things go south from there. The police get their adrenaline flowing and big momma cop ain’t happy with mister band director. She definitely gettin’ mad! They all appear to be of the same racial component though. So, you’re talking just your typical lawless person being confronted by the cops. He amped it up and had a shocking experience. The cops hopefully wrote a noise ordinance citation... so they could hang it up near the band awards in the lobby of the gymnasium!
Yeah, the rule is when cops tell you to leave, you leave.
I am on the cops side here...overeager or not, they were giving a lawful order.
Just comply, and if there was something amiss, address it for the future.
Guy was rude to the cops.
Rather than fight with the band director, wouldn't it have been more appropriate to just let the band complete their song then issue a citation?
This is a classic example of brainless, nonsensical abuse of authority and selective enforcement resulting in a case of "do what I say NOW!"

Stupid thing that should not have happened.
There is more to this than is being said.
They found three kids with guns in the stadium at my old high schools rival.
They have metal detection and home\away exits now.
Might be clearing the field to avoid trouble.

Probably, since Birmingham is a black majority city, as shown by their murder rate. 77.7 per 100,000.
My guess is the police were trying to clear the stadium and get people home before the shooting(s) started.
But the band director wanted to do a battle of the bands.

It’s called crowd control, it comes from things like graduation parties that gets shot up, drive by events i.e. stupid teenager violence using lethal weaponry.
It’s precautionary and it was in Alabama. We read about Chicago all the time but stupid crap happens in Alabama, Mississippi and other places... more often than not it’s black on black.
There are channels on YouTube that show black high school band competitions and the Baton Squad might as well set up poles and start swinging on them because it’s really over the top in that regard...
So yeah, it’s “cultural” as Professor Sowell so often talks about.

Typical? A band director telling the authorities to pound sand is a lot of things but definitely not "typical".

Bingo. Absolutely. I called it the other night and said the same when this incident was first posted here. It was just a tradition they were exercising. The band should get to have their game too, they work hard, harder than the ball players. I personally started hating football when they took the bands off.
While attempting to handcuff the director after the band stopped performing, an officer can be heard saying, “I'm fixing to tase you.”
Another officer says, “He hit the officer, he got to go to jail.”
“I did not swing on the officer, man,” Mims says in response.
Stupid A.. Police Srgt. (maybe his team lost and this was punishment)
