Santa Barbara woman whose racist comment sparked a protest apologizes in interview

A white woman captured on video making racist statements — which sparked a large protest in Santa Barbara over the weekend — has apologized for her “inappropriate remarks,” saying they were the result of a lapse in judgement.

exp-player-logo Watch More Two videos posted to Instagram show the Saturday confrontation between the woman, identified as Jeanne Umana, and a Latino construction worker, identified as Luis Cervantes. In one video, Umana is shown inside a house at an active construction site in Santa Barbara. She is approached by Cervantes and told that the house is on private property and that she needs to leave.

The footage then shows Cervantes following Umana out of the home and repeatedly telling her that she is on private property, to which she replies, “Oh, arrest me.” After a moment, Umana turns to Cervantes and says, “I live here. I’m American. You’re a Tijuanan.” The footage also shows Umana appearing to slap or grab Cervantes’ cellphone while he’s filming her.

Umana apologized for her behavior in an interview with the Los Angeles Times that was published Monday, saying her remarks were “inappropriate.” She claimed the confrontation began after a construction truck sped down her street and said that she went to the home to speak to a manager

“And then when someone put the camera in my face, I think that’s when I lost my judgment. My judgment went very, very badly,” Umana told the outlet. “I am truly sorry that this got out of hand, and I regret making statements like that, because I said them in the heat of the moment. They were not measured, and whatever I might feel, I don’t have the right to take it out on anybody else. But unfortunately, I lost control.”

Santa Barbara Karen was caught trespassing. The construction worker was polite and asked her to leave the private property. Karen claims to "work for the police" and then it goes south from there, apparently, as covered in the article.

The overreaction has begun of course but this woman seems like a real PoS. Much ado about nothing, really, but that's how it goes these days.

The word “white” is used only when it involves the accusation of racism against a Whitey.

I live here. I’m American. You’re a Tijuanan.

Is Luis Cervantes actually from Tijuana?

Hmm so telling someone the truth - about where they are from - is racist? Not polite, but short of racist.

Because they don’t go off like this idiot Karen did. She must be hell to be around. I’d wish she got arrested for trespassing and spent a few days in jail. Maybe that fix her horrid behavior.
