Ukrainian Tactics Put Russia on the Defensive in the Black Sea
WSJ ^

Posted on 09/20/2023 8:14:52 AM PDT by Brilliant

Commercial vessels have resumed using Ukraine’s main port of Odesa without asking permission from Russia for the first time since the war began—showing just how much the balance of power has changed in the Black Sea.

By imposing an asymmetrical war that relies on domestically produced naval drones and missiles, and that targets Russians ships in their own home bases, Ukraine has eroded much of Russia’s vaunted naval superiority...

Outnumbered 12 to one by the Russian Black Sea Fleet, the Ukrainian Navy wasn’t considered a meaningful force when Russia invaded... Ukraine quickly scuttled its flagship frigate... so that the vessel wouldn’t fall to Russian forces.

In Odesa, port operations had ceased. Residents could see enemy warships with the naked eye. Massed on the horizon, the Russian Navy fired artillery at the city and maneuvered with impunity...

Today, Russian warships no longer dare to venture into the northwestern part of the Black Sea, deterred by Ukrainian coastal missiles and extensive minefields. The Russian Black Sea Fleet itself has suffered heavy losses as a result of a series of successful Ukrainian strikes, with no areas of the Black Sea safe for it anymore.

Ukrainian attacks in recent weeks targeted Russian warships in the open seas and in their main home ports of Sevastopol and Novorossiysk. Last week’s missile strike on a Sevastopol dry dock destroyed a Kilo-class submarine, one of only six that Russia operated in the Black Sea, as well as a Ropucha-class large landing ship that Russia had planned to use for an amphibious landing...

“It’s very clear that the Russians no longer have the initiative in the Black Sea because of what has been a frankly ingenious approach by the Ukrainian Navy... There’s a really important shift,” said Michael Petersen, founding director of the Russia Maritime Studies Institute...

For gosh sakes, look up who Tokyo Rose was before you try to use her as you did, of course you are the Tokyo Rose.

America and the allies all support Ukraine against the enemy Russia, you try to sell Russia to an American audience, that was what Tokyo Rose was supposed to be doing, what you do.

The second most powerful military in the world, losing its Black Sea Fleet to a country with no navy, in a land war.

I don’t think they are the second most, but you are right that we thought they were. China is the second most I think. Then maybe South Korea.

“In short, Russia’s navy is surrendering the Black Sea.”

I propose renaming it the South NATO Sea (with the Baltic becoming the North NATO Sea.

We can wait until next year, to give the Russians a suitable mourning period, and for the rest of their Black Sea flotilla to be promoted to submarine.

On the bright side, russians are contributing wonderfully to the Black Sea’s artificial reef program. It will help offset the catastrophic environmental destruction they have deliberately caused in Ukraine.

“the catastrophic environmental destruction they (Russia) have deliberately caused in Ukraine.”

If Russia thinks it is hard paying for the war now, just wait until they have to pay the reparations later.

Very good news. The Russian navy has never been effective going back to the days of the Czar.

—”Instead of Tokyo Rose, we have Melitopol Megan.”

THAT WOULD BE A BADGE OF HONOR.

In 1974, investigative journalists found that important witnesses had asserted that they were forced to lie during testimony. They stated that FBI and US occupation police had coached them for more than two months about what they should say on the stand, and that they had been threatened with treason trials themselves if they did not cooperate.[18] U.S. President Gerald Ford pardoned Toguri in 1977 based on these revelations and earlier issues with the indictment.[19]: 47

Conservative with a brain. There are zero American interests in Ukraine. It is none of our business. I don’t give a crap about Russia. I don’t give a crap about Ukraine.

You should prove that the statements are not true. Why don't you start by showing that ships are not sailing in the Black Sea.

Or perhaps show us that the photographs from Russian sources of the destroyed submarine and nearly destroyed ship are somehow not true.

What makes you think other Freepers don't care about America? Is it because you don't?

Why else would you uncritically post Russian propaganda talking points?

Hopefully the shards from those missiles are now in American labs.

Far more importantly the US supplied Patriot missile batteries have been shooting down the Russian hypersonic missiles. So the Patriot's radar, targeting systems, and missiles are now known to be effective against the Russian missiles. And a lot of very useful signals intelligence information has probably been gathered by the Ukraine, the US and our NATO allies.

I don’t give a crap about Russia.

You will when they decide to invade a country that is a part of NATO.

And you should care now because our nation spends a huge amount of money to defend against Russia. Defeating Russia in Ukraine will save us trillions of dollars in defense spending in the future.

Really? I thought Ukraine had already killed over 2 million Russian soldiers and chased them all the way back to Moscow and it was just a matter of time until Putin surrendered unconditionally.

Prove anything that’s in the article.

If Russia thinks it is hard paying for the war now, just wait until they have to pay the reparations later.==

Can you ever recall any case in the past when Russia payed any reparation to anyone?

Same time Russian fleet all time in sea. Defend shores, Crimea Bridge, fire cruise missiles and so on. Fleet aviation bombs each day Ukraine assets in sea and on shore.

They are no ship-to-ship battles because ukies have no ships. Any they had was destroyed in a first days of this war.
