The Uneasy Truth About Traveling While Fat
Thrillist.com ^ | 9/15/23 | Cheyenne Davis

In 2019, on a trip to the Bahamas with my mom and sister, my flight turned into an uncomfortable ordeal. My seat belt wasn’t long enough to fasten, and a fellow passenger's visceral reaction added to my discomfort. I repeatedly asked the flight attendant for a seat belt extender and was ignored until takeoff, leaving me feeling disregarded and disrespected.

And this wasn’t the first time I’ve dealt with this particular kind of travel stress. I went to Paris in 2014, and found the city cramped and unwelcoming. Narrow staircases, tiny chairs, and compact showers were just the beginning. Throughout my time there, I endured constant staring, rude comments, and fetishistic remarks about my body. But these types of roadblocks aren’t limited to Paris or my flight to Nassau—Society has an anti-fat bias, and you can encounter it anywhere.

Living in a world fueled by fatphobia creates unnecessary barriers, from limited clothing options to discrimination in medical care, employment, and relationships. According to the NIH, more than two in five adults live in a large body. And yet despite this fact, we continue to face daily challenges—including in travel, where inequities like the ones outlined below so often deny us access to the same life-changing experiences available to others.

“and yes, there is a huge genetic component to being obese...”

Not so big that Keto/Carnivore and Intermittent Fasting can’t control it!

“I went to Paris in 2014, and found the city cramped and unwelcoming. Narrow staircases, tiny chairs, and compact showers were just the beginning. “

It really wouldn’t be unreasonable to sue Paris in order to force the city to completely race and redesign itself to accommodate the author. After all, fat liberation is the new civil right.

“Agreed—notice there are no articles written by folks complaining about how sick and tired they are at being surrounded by fatties wherever they go....”

I used to make a weekly trip to Walmart. Now I defer to Target for that reason and the congestion from the electric carts. Too depressing.

Same, and despite having a 33” waist, my shoulders are more than 24” wide

If I don’t get a vacant seat next to me on a flight I’m basically sitting sideways

Stop eating wheat. 100%

You have to be religious about it. Try it for 1 month

Meat and fruit and veggies. As much as you want- by the end of the month you will not want much. Your hunger will disappear, as will your stomach and fat.

She should try going to colonial America, where she will find more narrow winding roads and small buildings.

And her wide load would never make it up the stairs in a Victorian London house.

The airports are the safest for calling out bad behavior because of the police. I admit I was a little out of control in my instance ( and I bet you she will not do that to another passenger) , but I would not hesitate at all when people are taking their luggage out of their overhead bins after the flight to tell them they need to bathe and wash their clothes before they go on another flight. I am sort of a bitch when I travel.

Or buy a business class or first class seat so she doesn’t poach/steal a seat bought and paid for by a normal healthy person.

Named after the tribe she ate.

I used to be heavy. Impending kidney failure was causing me to hold water as a teen - 100lbs. of it. That’s more than a 12x12x12 in. cube of water, which is about 80 lbs.

I would rather die than go back to that. Period. I was always in pain, my blood pressure was astronomical, and I was always exhausted after performing simple tasks like walking up the stairs to my room.

Now all I need to do is have the excess skin excised and I’ll be happy. There’s another easy 10+ lbs.

"My seat belt wasn’t long enough to fasten, and a fellow passenger's visceral reaction added to my discomfort."

And what about the discomfort of the passengers sitting next to you? Many morbidly obese people seem to have the opinion that whatever space they fill is theirs, even if you paid for it. If you can't fit between the arm rests, you should buy 2 seats.
