The Department of the Interior on Monday announced a proposal to bar oil and gas development in large swathes of New Mexico in a bid to protect sensitive lands that some Indian tribes consider sacred.
The ban would affect more than 4,000 acres within Sandoval County, and aims to "safeguard sacred Tribal lands, boost important local recreation opportunities, and support wildlife habitat connectivity," the agency stated. Prohibitions would last for 50 years but not impact existing development rights.
"Today we’re responding to calls from Tribes, elected leaders, and community members who want to see these public lands protected. We look forward to hearing more from the public to inform decisions about how activities, like gravel mining, may impact these lands, including the important cultural and natural resources," DOI Secretary Deb Haaland said.

Have you ever driven across a reservation? Yeah. “Sacred”. Garbage everywhere.
This is a trial run. NM has a lot of natural gas in the eastern counties. And this admin has it’s sights set on the Permian basin also. That huge field produces 40% of crude in this country.
That will Give China plenty of time to acquire those resources.
Come on people. Will it pass? Can it be overturned if it does pass? We do have the house.
When you folks are react it’s not buying us anything . Use your heads and figure out how we stand up this.
THIS BAN also steals $$$$$$$$$ from the tribes.
No matter. Chief Yellow Running Water will get a fat stipend from a NGO, and he'll be on NPR saying how happy the eagle is that his nesting ground was protected.
The good thing about the Permian Basin reserves, is that the Government doesn’t own it. It is mainly in private hands, unlike New Mexico.
