The Republican Party of Florida sided with former President Donald Trump and his allies on Friday, rescinding the state’s loyalty oath primary requirement that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) supported.
Earlier in the year, the Florida GOP voted to require presidential candidates sign a pledge to support the party’s eventual nominee to make it on the state’s March 19 primary ballot.
Trump has maintained he would not sign any loyalty pledge, telling Newsmax, “Why would I sign it? I can name three or four people that I wouldn’t support for president. So right there, there’s a problem.”
Lee County GOP Chair Michael Thompson said “of course” the loyalty oath was designed to go after Trump, dubbing it the “Donald J. Trump rule.”
Florida’s move came as the Republican National Committee implemented a similar loyalty pledge requirement for candidates to appear on the debate stage.
However, Republican state Sen. Joe Gruters brought a motion to rescind the loyalty pledge at the Florida GOP’s quarterly meeting in Orlando on Friday. The vote to rescind the pledge passed on an “overwhelming voice vote,” according to Greuters.
“A lot of Republicans in this state are saying the primary is basically over. Trump is ahead by 40, 50 points in some polls and he’s battling multiple indictments. So why would our state party want to fight his campaign?” Greuters said Friday. “If we didn’t make this change, the Republican Party as we know it today wouldn’t exist in two months. There would be a complete revolt from the president’s base.”
The party’s decision to rescind the loyalty pledge deals a serious blow to DeSantis and his allies in his home state.

“Right or wrong, it would be viewed as a f*** you to DeSantis,” a prominent Florida Republican told NBC News.
Most of Florida’s congressional delegation has endorsed Trump, and a July Florida Atlantic University poll found Trump ahead of DeSantis by 20 points.
DeSantis is totally out of this thing. It’s a little disturbing that he is — for all practical purposes — working against the Republican nominee.
Remember this? I do.
Whoever advised Ron to go head to head against Trump is a first-class idiot. If they thought the swamp was going to force him out of the race they don’t know Trump.
Whoever advised Trump to go head to head against Biden is a first-class idiot. If they thought Trump was going to force him out of the race they don’t know the deep state.
exactly- they should have realized that this election was not their time- and worked WITH Trump to help him win, who in turn woudl have supported ron to help him win when he ran-
Tell it to the posters here weirdly still pushing DeSantis.
Delusional.
No one advised him. He saw that he’s the clear better choice and decided he can lead the country better. Trump cannot and will not win a general and he’s doing nothing to gain back voters who are repulsed by him. He has negatives like no other modern day politician. In the low 30s. All Trump is doing is lying about Florida and desantis and dumping campaign funds into legal fees.
Desantis is clear second place in a huge field. He’s not out of it. A vote has not been cast. There are about a half dozen non contenders in the race but he and Haley are the only ones with any chance if not Trump. Trumps polls skyrocketed when the indictments started and he’s maintained that and grown the lead with each new one. What happens as debates go, legal realities set in and voting actually begins is unknown as far as whether that changes but that BS narrative spun by OnyTrumpers is bunk.
Trump won two presidential elections (the second time excluding the cheating). Trump gained 12 million votes in the second election. Trump's support among black males and hispanics has never been higher for a Republican. There are millions of people who typically don't vote because they are so turned off to the uniparty, who voted for Trump in 2020, and that number continues to increase.
You keep believing the uniparty propaganda that Joe got 81 million votes. Most people don't.
Desantis is clear second place in a huge field. He’s not out of it. A vote has not been cast.
A vote has not been cast in the general, but you rule Trump out, whilst a vote has also not be cast in the primary, yet you don't rule DeSantis out.
Try to be more objective.
I do not believe that at all. Trump got screwed. Some of that was his doing signing mail ballot bills because he paid no attention to details of the covid bill. Things are worse now in voting fraud potential in every lost swing state except Georgia. The problem is worse. Also fraud is not limitless. Trump has alienated huge swaths of voters, especially women voters who will without question vote Democrat if he’s the candidate. Reflexively he’s election turnout machine for the left. 2022 proved that. Those tied to Trump did worse than those not in state races everywhere (and statewide elections are relevant)
Legal votes plus illegal votes totaled 81 million in 2020. I see nothing that has happened that would change that next time if he’s on the ballot. January 6 was an additional albatross since the Election Day. The only argument for Trump is Biden’s absolute failure but voter backlash to that is muted because Trump has been counterproductive at winning back alienated voters since the election. I was a die hard supporter in 2020 because until covid he had good policies. He is not the only one with those good policies in 2024.
It's not really about Trump. We all got screwed. The country got screwed. The country is now being destroyed.
Some of that was his doing signing mail ballot bills because he paid no attention to details of the covid bill.
The Senate unanimously passed CARES. I believe the House did too. I remember. There was no possibility of a veto.
Trump has alienated huge swaths of voters, especially women voters who will without question vote Democrat if he’s the candidate.
No he didn't. Trump gained 12 million votes. Biden did not get 81 million votes. If anything, some woman were turned off to the overturning of Roe v. Wade. And for those woman, DeSantis' 6 week ban is even more of a turn off.
He is not the only one with those good policies in 2024.
The other candidates have ties to the uniparty and some of the things that they say and do show that.
