DeSantis launches billboards in Illinois urging law enforcement to ‘make the smart move’ to Florida

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office is launching billboards in Illinois to encourage law enforcement officers in the state to "make the smart move" to Florida after Chicago has allowed noncitizens to become officers and eliminated cash bail.

"Citizenship Matters. Law Enforcement Matters," the billboards in Chicago say. "Make the Smart Move to Florida!"

The billboards tout a $5,000 signing bonus for out-of-state police officers who relocate to the Sunshine State as part of its law enforcement recruitment bonus payment program signed into law by the Republican governor in 2022.

In a statement, DeSantis cited moves in Illinois to allow some noncitizens to become police officers and the elimination of its cash bail system, policies DeSantis’ administration has rejected.

"Florida strongly supports law enforcement and has consistently enacted commonsense criminal justice policies to keep our communities safe," said DeSantis, who is running for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

"We stand behind our citizen officers, and we give them the tools to succeed professionally and personally. Other states deputize noncitizens, enact policies that favor criminals over victims and work to overtly or covertly defund the police, but not in Florida. I look forward to welcoming the Illinois men and women in blue to the law-and-order state."

...

Florida’s recruitment drive is bringing results to the state. More than 2,700 law enforcement recruits from 48 states have moved to Florida, according to DeSantis’ office, including 230 from California, New York and Pennsylvania. At least 37 have moved from Illinois.

Not sure if this helps his presidential campaign, but it is a good move for Florida.

Not sure if this helps his presidential campaign

Allow me to help you to understand; this won't help, nor will his use of other 20th Century technologies like the fax machine, Conestoga wagons, Western Union telegraphs, or the Pony Express.

DeSantis is being successful in recruiting law enforcement from other states, voters in those states may not be so appreciative of losing their local law enforcement. But here, again, DeSantis is not playing politics, just exercising good leadership.

He wouldn’t win Illinois anyway, so… cool move.

DeSantis does not need to concern himself with Illinois. Chicago determines state-wide elections in the People’s Republic on the Mississippi. I’m pretty sure no Republican will ever win the electoral votes from Illinois in any of our lifetimes!

Don’t take this personally, but this is a publicity stunt by a campaign staff that should have been fired last Spring. The use of billboards to recruit a work force is so amazingly juvenile that it defies words. It’s an embarrassment

This will create a mess down the road when all of these cops demand the salaries that are bankrupting their home states.

Sounds like a pretty strong message to criminals not to come to FL.

I disagree. With Florida having one of the highest (if not the highest) influx of new residents, we need more LEO's. Why not advertise for the best we can get? So it's billboards. Big deal.

Does DeSantis know he’s not running for governor?

No Florida state income tax. Nice enticement.

You so hate DeSantis that your vision is clouded. This is a governor doing his job. Cops are out on the roads every day. Billboards are high visibility, cost efficient advertising. Your seething hate for DeSantis is juvenile.

Turn Florida into a police state? No thanks...There was a police officer who arrested a father for complaining about his daughter’s rape. Sorry, police officers have far too often proven themselves to be weapons of the government.

Your seething hate for DeSantis is clouding your intellect. Your post reflects a raving nutter liberal screaming to defund the police. Your singular anecdote occurred in Virginia. Drink more Kool-Aid.

If you’re unable to question why DeSantis went from being a viable challenger to Trump, to a campaign now in single digits, you explain the state of Bush Dynasty Republicanism very, very well.

I believe he gave law enforcement bonuses also--not a lot of money but more of a 'we support and appreciate our law enforcement officers in Florida'

I responded appropriately to your nutty post about billboards being juvenile. Now you are attempting to drag the discussion off-topic from the current thread. Your seething hate for Governor DeSantis is noted. Your post is obtuse.

Yes, in 2022 Governor DeSantis signed a bill to provide $5000 sign-on bonuses to new law enforcement hires. Through December, more than 600 bonuses had been paid.
