The issue of food scarcity and food deserts have led to protests and shined a spotlight on deep-rooted inequities in Chicago.
"It is an abomination to think that 10 miles from Englewood people are living twenty years longer because they have access to things they need," said Ameya Pawar, Economic Security Project.
The non-profit Economic Security Project and the city are partnering to explore the creation of a municipally owned grocery store.
"Really it's filling the gaps for the market and making sure that people have access to all the goods and resources that they need to survive and thrive," Pawar said.
In the past five years on the South Side, store closings have included a Whole Foods, two Targets and three Walmarts. Pawar said the model of offering millions in city subsidies to large operators has failed, but while those businesses were beholden to bottom lines, a city-owned grocery could measure profit in a different way.
"A longer life span, better educational outcomes, and lower rates of disease which over time will save taxpayers money," Pewar said.
Pewar said city-owned groceries have been successful in smaller communities like Baldwin, Fla., but some are skeptical.
"The reason we are considered a food apartheid or in this food apartheid is because of disinvestment, and the disinvestment has come locally from government," said Aisha Butler, Resident Association of Greater Englewood.
My crystal ball shows gang wars to determine who really owns the store...after a few city employees are killed in the crossfire the “bold experiment in social justice” will end...
Do it! And then provide security against the shoplifting! Do it! And then wait for the liability claims as someone falls in the store(s) and sues the city, instead of a private company. Do it! PLEASE do it!
In the last year I have constantly made reference to the scene in Soylent Green where the “furniture” goes out food shopping at the store guarded by a guy with an M-16 and buys the only beef in town. That’s what I imaging any Dem-run city is going to look like very soon. Problem is that they’ll come out to the suburbs and cause trouble.
Another wonderful idea, government owned businesses. What could go wrong? All they need to do is, take over a vacant Super Walmart, order food products on the never never plan and sell them to the low & no income poor on the basis of; To each according to their wants, needs & desires at the price they can ‘afford to pay’. What could possibly go wrong?
For you literalist here, this is Sarcasm
Yay, communism!
Anyone else see now why they are allowing the criminal theft? They are going to fill the vacuum left by private businesses with state owned supply.
Another step in the Communist creep agenda for the state to end up owning everything. It is all part of the communist take over of all private property.
I bet it would be cheaper to just put a big fence around Chicago. That way, TWICE A DAY the government could ship food in for the populace to gather up.
They can hang a big sign on the fence that says -
CHI-CONGO ZOO
Feeding times 0800 & 1700
“Communism where the state owns everything.”
Yep, that is the end goal right there.
Chicago socialists will find out how impossible socialism is, in reality, to implement.
I'll take odds that the delivery trucks won't even get unloaded before they are robbed of their goods.
In fact, no for-profit businesses will even consider delivering foodstuffs to this store because here's what their delivery truck will look like after the first week of operations...
My favorite government run business story is when the IRS decided to run a whorehouse that had been in business for two hundred years, the Mustang Ranch. (For back taxes owed.) They lost so much money they went out of business in months. A senator commented, “only the government would fail at a business that sells p*ssy and beer.”
I think they call that a Food Bank. Knock yourself out Shitcago...
In summary, tax the productive so the dregs of society can openly steal from a government forced supermarket.
This filthy hypocrite, Ameya Pawar, needs to be asked repeatedly why he won't use HIS money to open a store in Chicago.
He must certainly want to stop this "abomination".
” I’m from the government and I’m here to help”
They will trumpet their success at eliminating shoplifting as well as the honesty of the “community” when nobody steals moldy bread, rancid meat, and rotten vegetables.
This is what this whole looting and burning episode is all about: government takeover.
I hope they do it and it fails spectacularly for all of the predictable reasons. It would be a nice object lesson paid for by the city of Chicago.
BTTT
“The reason we are considered a food apartheid or in this food apartheid is because of disinvestment, and the disinvestment has come locally from government,”
No, it is because of theft. Y’all can only steal so much before “da man” gets fed up with it and moves out. You can’t claim racism in this case.
“You can’t claim racism in this case.”
If you happen to notice that the thieves are black then you are a racist.
If you don’t want to be a racist you must close your eyes whenever a robbery is happening.
