Following altercations at a party celebrating the end of Berkeley’s eviction moratorium Tuesday evening, the Berkeley Property Owners Association released a statement condemning the protests and voicing disappointment in the city of Berkeley and Berkeley Police Department’s response.
“We condemn the actions of hostile dissidents who disrupted a private gathering at a local restaurant to intimidate, harass, and physically assault our members who are law-abiding small business owners,” read part of a statement, which was shared with SFGATE.
A cocktail party thrown by the Berkeley Property Owners Association in celebration of the end of the city’s eviction moratorium resulted in protests and even physical fights.
The event at Freehouse taproom was met with protests from local residents, who stood on Bancroft Way chanting, “See our might, see our power, landlords get no happy hour,” according to Berkeleyside. Meanwhile, landlords had drinks and appetizers inside the bar.
About an hour passed before protesters entered the bar, at which point multiple fights broke out, Berkeleyside reported. According to one witness, a male BPOA member who attended the event slapped a female protester in the face and pushed her. Videos of the event show other violent altercations, including a protester knocking a party attendee’s eyeglasses off and a party attendee swinging their fist toward a protester.
Protesters left the venue shortly after the fights broke out, according to Berkeleyside.
In a move that critics are calling “one of the most tasteless events I’ve ever heard of,” Berkeley landlords are celebrating the end of eviction protections in the East Bay city with a cocktail party.

IF there are valid/clear pics of the protesters—Maybe the landlord can ID some as THEIR tenants.
IF so, I would seek to have them REMOVED from any premises I owned.
Boy, they seem to be a popular group!
Sorry to hear about your wife. Hope she’s doing better.

There should be more parties like this for all sorts of events. In fact, every Al Sharpton protest could have a counter cocktail-party.
It’s important that rule breaking and non-paying tenants be able to be evicted.
But holding a party to celebrate is in poor taste.
Same as it would be if bankers held a party to celebrate farm foreclosures.
It’s a private party…..no problem .
……
Are we learning that this is the first time and date since covid crap that this area property owners were or are able to evict a tenant ??
That in itself is absurd.
You feel foreclosure of a family farm is equivalent to finally being able to get rid of a tenant who has paid zero rent for three years? Are you sure you’re on the right website?
Wow. Whatever. I’m with the landlords. If you can’t see how this is an absolute infringement on private property rights you’re on the wrong site. Seriously.
I’ll say it again.
Non-paying or destructive tenants need to be evicted.
But holding a party to celebrate is in poor taste.
What happened to property owners who couldn’t evict was government gone stark raving mad .
