Republican Voters Split Over Trump's Decision to Avoid Primary Debates
VOA News ^ | September 13, 2023 | Matt Haines

Donald Trump skipped the first Republican debate in Wisconsin last month, and the GOP frontrunner has indicated he will not join his party’s second debate in California on Sept. 27.

Republican primary voters are split over whether this strategy will help or hurt ...

...

The former president reinforced his debate-skipping strategy on his social media site Truth Social writing, "The public knows who I am & what a successful Presidency I had. I WILL THEREFORE NOT BE DOING THE DEBATES!"

It is an approach Trump explained in a June interview with Fox News host Bret Baier in which he wondered aloud, "Why would I allow people at 1 or 2% and 0% to be hitting me with questions all night?"

Despite big leads over all his Republican rivals, there are still some party members who are unhappy with Trump's strategy.

...

"I think he's making a horrible decision by not showing up for the debates," Joseph Johnson, an engineer from Los Angeles, told VOA. "He could very well lose the nomination if he keeps standing on the sideline while his policy gets ripped apart by other candidates."

...

Still, Johnson said he found the Trump-less debate refreshing and appreciated the policy discussions that he believes could not have taken place if the Republican frontrunner "was sucking all the oxygen out of the room with his antics."

A poll by The Economist/YouGov from Aug. 26-29 suggests that even though most Republicans (61%) agree with Trump's decision to skip the debate, the majority hope he will attend the second one. Fifty-seven percent of Republican voters said they think Trump should participate in the event, while just 17% said they did not. Twenty-six percent said they were not sure.

We used to win back in the day

****************

When?

We didn’t start winning Congress until 1994, and a case can be made that it doesn’t really matter which of the two puppet parties is in control.

Trump has earned nothing. The first votes are still months away, we’ll see if he stands aside and relies on his past or decides to engage.

If Trump is allowed to pick a questioner of his choice, and have veto power over the moderator, then he should attend. Otherwise, no. I sick and tired of these debates turning into forums to attack conservatives.

Every last debate should be run this way, with every participant (not just Trump) having input.

Reagan and Trump are pretty much the only “wins” I’ve seen in my lifetime.

Trump is basically running as the incumbent, for all intents and purposes.

The only purpose of these "debates" is for a bunch of losers to get face time on TV while they try to convince Republican voters that they're going to do the same things Trump has already done.

No need until the ankle-biters are flushed.

Let Nikki harpy and Ramaswampy and DeSanctimonious and 30 Pence fight out who will be the first loser.

He could do that as king-maker instead of leading what I think will be a failing campaign. Besides, and I’m 63, he’s in good health now but that is one trip to the hospital from being undone. Everyone’s focused on Biden’s age and health, if anything trips Trump up. Timing could be disastrous. I’d prefer to see him as the elderly statesman, the king-maker, helping the party win rather than lead it to a me, me, me defeat.

Trump has earned nothing.

What does that even mean? For those of US that will vote Trump, he has already earned it. For all of the neverTrump morons nothing would be good enough. This is all just part of your neverTrump fantasy. You lose.

Personally, he should accept terms and participate in the debate. If he wants the nomination, time to start working for it.

Are you suggesting the candidate who is between 40 and 50 points ahead of his closest competitor isn't "working for it"???

Doesn't this "time to start working for your 50 point lead" just prove what a loser candidate your RDS is?

Seriously, who are you really trying to help by repeating such silly nonsense?

I think the debates should be narrowed to DeSantis, Christie, and Pence. Haley and Ramaswamy are constitutionally unqualified, the others have so little support as to be extras at this point. They’ve also got to be worried that the Trump VP race may be over after last week’s rally with Noem.

The first votes are around four months away. So far, all of the candidates have zero votes.
