BREAKING: New Mexico Attorney General tells the Governor that he won't defend her carry ban, saying "I do not believe it passes constitutional muster."
Her constituents should be demanding she resign immediately. She violated her oath, and their Constitutional rights.
Yeah, Torrez wants to appear to be the "reasonable" one on gun rights. It's a win for him both ways, support for anti-gun legislative actions and a feather in his cap if he runs for governor.
I’m for it. Lets divide it all up, seal our borders with shoot to !!!!
People are finally talking about lawsuits/prosecutions for Deprivation of Rights Under Color of Law. As they should. And people like this AG are appropriately intimidated, as they should be. Because this is blatantly what the governor is trying to pull.
You’d think she’d have rounded up some support before, like, stepping out the window.
He’s probably looking to take her office when he gets the chance. Regardless of the AG’s motives, it is mostly correctly reasoned. These cases may win in lower courts due to local political leanings, but overturned higher up. Prosecuting what you know is a losing case is just a waste of time and as the AG said - missing the mark.
What the AG leaves out is that a huge percentage of gun violence is drug related - from drug turf beefs, retaliations, robberies of drug dealers and their cash, and even to a degree addicts themselves robbing and stealing to support their addiction.
Without addressing the drug problem you really won’t make much of a dent in criminal gun violence.
Won't happen; she was just re-elected for a four-year term last year and Dims have a super majority in the legislature if Pubs try impeachment. New Mexico has no citizen recall in its constitution.
Useless. All the governor needs is a friendly judge. The lawsuits will run much longer than her 30-day “emergency health” order. The fact that nobody will enforce it isn’t worrying her. It’s a test of emergency powers that might fail, or not, but her ability to make order itself is what she wants to show.
Plus 1.
That’s an excellent point. She’s being sued, as I recall, individually, and in her official capacity in many of these lawsuits. Now, the state won’t pay for her defense because even the Democrat Attorney General realizes she way, way, way overstepped and won’t touch it with a 10 foot pole. I kind of want to see this open up the floodgates for more people to sue her as she is now on her own.
I believe 100% in recall elections.
I wish the GOP had long ago, whenever they could have, in the states, passed legislation approving recall elections for all elected offices, and no confidence ballot initiatives against all appointed officials.
I’ve been trying to think what your game here is also. She released her executive order and as expected, the local sheriff said they’re not going to enforce it. Then, she double down, and even went as far as the district attorney, and even the local police departments said they won’t enforce it. It’s practically unheard of for a large municipal police department to say they’re not going to enforce a law.
Yet, she kept doubling down on insanity. Personally, I suspect she wanted to get noticed for some higher office, as no one paid attention to New Mexico. I never really thought of Newsom, however, I was kind of thinking, maybe some cabinet position or consideration as a running mate in 2024 if Biden drops out
Not sure why Trump didn’t jump in this though
If there are no lawsuits brought, no court can strike down the governor’s decree. In 30 days, she can take credit for reducing gun violence and the movement can grow.
Well...that was kind of a hysterical move on her part. Over all this furor, I couldn’t help but think of a Chile Verde Burrito with rice and beans, jalapenos and queso.
Or folks are thinking about the 2024 election, and taking people's guns is a third rail.
What she needs is being put in solitary at the State Pen with a certain Randy Newman song on loop 24/7.
I know it is protocol but why refer to someone like her as “Honorable” when she isn’t.
