Donald Trump has repeatedly taken credit for the US Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to revoke a constitutional right to abortion care, a landmark ruling that has upended abortion access for millions of Americans in the months that followed.
Within his one four-year term, the former president appointed three conservative justices to the nine-member panel, tilting the court’s ideological balance in a promised effort to achieve a long-held Republican goal of overturning the 1973 decision in Roe v Wade.
The conservative majority’s decision in Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization has proved unpopular with most Americans and has fuelled victories in several Democratic campaigns and ballot measures to protect abortion rights.
In remarks to a crowd of supporters at a South Dakota rally on 8 September, the former president – who once said “I’m the one that got rid of Roe v Wade” – admitted that the Supreme Court decision has “probably cost” the GOP politically.
“Last year, those justices bravely and incredibly ruled on something that everybody has wanted for decades,” Mr Trump said. “They ruled to end Roe v Wade. That was a big thing. And it’s probably cost us politically, because the other side got energised.”
Mr Trump, who has touted himself as the “most pro-life president in American history” while promising capital punishment against drug offenders and human traffickers, is among Republican candidates jockeying for the GOP’s 2024 nomination while navigating the post-Roe landscape of anti-abortion activism – and proposals for a national ban – against widespread opposition to anti-abortion laws.
He has previously called Ron DeSantis’s Florida ban on abortion access at six weeks of pregnancy “too harsh,” drawing a rare rebuke from an influential anti-abortion group. Mr Trump has avoided saying directly whether he would sign legislation to ban abortion nationally. ***

I think it will backfire spectacularly. If I’m not mistaken Florida and Iowa just passed 6 week bans, a few other states have heartbeat laws etc. The second this becomes a federal issue you go from relying on state Senators in conservative states to do the right thing to relying on Susan Collins and Murkowski to do the right thing. That’s a definite losing position. I think it’s far more likely that on a federal level this will be legalized than banned.
Thanks for making that post early on. It saved a lot of us from having to write similar.
Both can be true. They are not exclusive of each other”
Exactly the children who wrote this don’t what to do with a Political leader being honest.
You don’t understand the basic terms and concepts here. (Please don’t tempt me to reference measures of intellect.)
Murder means killing another person.
I respectfully disagree. Ultimately, life either begins at conception or it doesn’t. If you correctly conclude it does, then abortion is not an issue for individual states to decide, just as it wouldn’t be acceptable to tell our forefathers to move north if they didn’t want to see the slaves beaten.
I happen to agree that life begins at conception. But you don’t win a battle with evil by wishing it. We’ve prayed for year and God has answered. It’s a moral issue but you can’t legislate morality. We’ve been given a gift, now we work to end abortion one step at a time, one state at a time.
If you are not up for the battle, it’s your choice you can sit on the sidelines with your wishes in one hand and your demands in the other. The rest of us are up for fighting the battle against evil.
Women should simply not have the right to vote.
How the hell was Trump supposed to know that “americans” were really a bunch of closeted Nazi baby killers?
Exactly
I'm damn proud of Trump and he has my loyalty.
“IN the long run-—IT isn’t the biggest problem the USA has.”
It absolutely is. For every country in the West.
What nation has a future when it kills off its own children ?
In the Bible the pagans burned their own children in the fire to worship Baal and Molech.
The Lord specifically identified this as the worst act of idolatry by the Jews when they adopted these practices.
Compromising on abortion to supposedly “gain” on other political issues, is the same as the Jews sacrificing their own children in the hope of bountiful harvests and success in war.
And it is worse for America to do this. Just as it was for the Jews.
Because both countries had known better in the past, but rebelled and refused to live as God-fearing people.
Reasonisfaith.
“Trump is right on both positions. You can agree that the abortion issue cost the GOP but also agree that abortion is evil and wrong and being politically against it is the right position to take.”
Exactly !
This is Trump telling it like it is.
And being candid about this is why he is a real leader who got this done, while the self-righteous Sunday School Holy Men Repubs achieved nothing.
Notice that I said it is a temporary fix. That does not mean, however, that ultimately we can ignore the fact that innocent lives are being snuffed out in our nation, and that we can never pretend we are a just society until abortion is outlawed universally. Incidentally, I think that the reason that the topic spawns such irrational outrage in liberals is that to admit the truth of their error threatens their entire world view. I would also add that pragmatists around Abraham Lincoln undoubtedly gave him similar advice as yours when it came to the issue of Abolition.
What? Why is it not in their (the states’, not the Federal government’s) power to outlaw abortion? Abortion was banned in many states before Roe v. Wade. Saying that killing an innocent human being is a “personal decision” is a strange argument - moral relativism at its “best”. How can you say that a group of people shouldn’t by protected by law just because they haven’t been born yet? How would you like it if someone wanted to deny this protection to all people with green eyes?
When Hitler started murdering Jews we all knew he was evil and had to be eliminated. We wanted it done the minute we discovered the concentration camps and heard rumors of the ovens. We still had to fight a long and bloody battle to eliminate that evil.
I’m sorry you are not up for the battle, we could use help eliminating abortion state by state.
True. But what is also true is it hurt the GOP politically.
Abortion is a state issue not a federal issue all the noise is from Murder Inc. because all the federal money they lost.
I am more than up for the fight, and I know the initial battlegrounds will be in the states. However, just like the republic could not stand with slave and free states, we cannot survive with such a fundamental disagreement about matters of life and death. I don’t get how you can, in the end, accept that we can live in our states that honor life and allow others to promote the culture of death.
