Zelensky dismisses compromise with Putin, pointing to Prigozhin’s death

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has said the death of Yevgeny Prigozhin – the Russian mercenary leader whose plane crashed weeks after he led a mutiny against Moscow’s military leadership – shows what happens when people make deals with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

As Ukraine’s counteroffensive moves into a fourth month, with only modest gains to show so far, Zelensky told CNN’s Fareed Zakaria he rejected suggestions it was time to negotiate peace with the Kremlin.

“When you want to have a compromise or a dialogue with somebody, you cannot do it with a liar,” Volodymyr Zelensky said.

The Wagner leader’s dramatic death, which followed a short-lived rebellion that threatened the authority of the Russian president, was a warning to be heeded, Zelensky suggested.

“If Russia has a winning position why would they need to negotiate?”

Russia doesn’t have to negotiate, and what’s more, they are not going to.

The entire Russian elite is of the belief that NATO forces will be facing their front line once there is a cease fire.

So that front line needs to be on militarily defensible terrain for Russia. The two choices are the Dnieper, and the old borders of Galicia.

The size of future Russian mobilizations will determine how big they intend to go.

“Shall the West also give back Eastern Europe to the Russians?“

Russia never possessed Eastern Europe. Maybe you mean the Soviet Union? That was dissolved 30+ years ago? That was co-founded by Ukraine, an original constituent member of the USSR? Are you saying the West owns Eastern Europe now?

Dissolve NATO like the Warsaw Pact, and none of this would have ever happened.

The US will support Ukraine until the last Ukrainian is dead.

They are occupying the Russian speaking part of Ukraine which is probably why they invaded in the first place; that and maybe to keep NATO from moving nuclear weapon onto their southwest border and blocking them from their Mare Nostrum.

Well, at least you admitted that Russia invaded Ukraine.

What does “Russian speaking” have to do with it? Somehow that gives Russia a legit excuse?

And NATO is a *defensive* alliance. Countries apply of their own accord. And they join because Russian imperialism is a threat to their very lives. The full-scale invasion is precisely why Norway & Sweden have joined. NATO is not the threat. *Russia* is the threat.

Let’s ask the Circassians whether Russia is a good neighbor or not.

Oh wait. We can’t. Because Russia slaughtered them and they no longer exist.

I suppose the Holodomor was just a diet program that was a wee bit too aggressive. And Katyn was a big cookout with too much vodka.

You enable Russian imperialism. You’re no different than Chomsky.
