DeSantis hits Trump for saying he couldn't fire Fauci
Washington Examiner ^ | September 7, 2023 | Mabinty Quarshie

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) slammed former President Donald Trump for claiming he was not "allowed" to fire former White House chief medical adviser Anthony Fauci, who helped lead the nation's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

DeSantis's comments come after Trump was asked on Hugh Hewitt's radio show Wednesday why he hadn't fired Fauci, who angered Republicans over his approach to masking and other pandemic-era guidance.

"First of all, you’re not allowed. He’s civil service, and you’re not allowed to fire him," Trump told Hewitt. "But forget that, because I don’t necessarily go by everything. But Dr. Fauci would tell me things, and I wouldn’t do them in many cases. But also, he wasn’t a big player in my administration."

The Florida governor dismissed Trump's defense, claiming he was pivoting from his previous comments about his relationship with Fauci.

"It's important to point out for a long time that was not his excuse," DeSantis told the Rubin Report on Wednesday. "His excuse had been that if you fired Fauci, both the Democrats and the media would have pitched a fit, which, of course, is 100% true."

"But that's the price of leadership. You got to stand up and do what's right," the governor continued. "Clearly, he could have been fired from the White House Task Force. There was no obligation to run him out at press conference after press conference, have him doing media interviews."

...

"During the height of the COVID stuff in 2020, Fauci would do local hits in Florida media attacking me for having schools open and some of these other stuff," he said. "So, there was no obligation to do that. I think you could have also fired him from NIH because he had basically committed misconduct with the gain of function."

It was a response to this post

“DeSantis is demonstrating his 20/20 hindsight.”

No. He is stating facts.

My point is that DeSantis is presenting a sanitized truth. DeSantis took some rather harsh and illogical covid positions such as closing beaches. He did stop the shutdowns in his state but not very early. Other states had already opened before Florida.
IMO mistakes were made because the facts were unclear and lies were aggressively spread by Fauci and others who knowingly lied, pushed unsafe ineffective therapies and blocked safe effective therapies. Not America’s finest moment. I don’t think DeSantis should be revising the past for political purposes either to boost himself or attack Trump.

So when did the Meatball from FLA advise Trump to fire Fauci?

He did close some beaches but that was because he was facing a massive influx of spring breakers to certain beaches and was relying on the advice of Trump and local authorities. Most beaches stayed open.

Trump is the one revising history: “Surprise, Ron (DeSantis) was a big lockdown governor on the China virus, sealing all beaches and everything else for an extended period of time,” former President Donald Trump said in a March 22 statement.

RDS shut down Fla before he opened it up.

“I meant DeSantis. I’m sorry I was unclear.”

Since your post applied to Trump and not to DeSantis I was confused.

Thanks I would prefer not to litigate a contentious and complex past that can be interpreted many ways. Let us agree to disagree here.

Garbage. DeSantis will vote R in the general. We have seen posts here from Trump supporters saying they will stay home if Trump is not nominated.

This is not DU!

Discuss the issues all you wish, BUT DO NOT MAKE IT PERSONAL!

Remember to use common courtesy when posting to FR. Leave off the insults and flames, name calling, etc.

We are conservatives. Be respectful to your debate adversary (fellow FReeper). For example, do not accuse them of being a “Putinista”, “commrade”, “murderer”, “baby-killer”, etc, just because he may have a difference of opinion whether or not the US government should be involved in a controversial foreign war where we were not attacked.

Likewise, things in the presidential primary are getting over-heated. We want to be sure we come out of this with a Republican president, house and senate. The only way we can accomplish that is to unify the Republican Party. We can’t destroy our own candidates. Whoever it is will need to pull us ALL together. Keep the ultimate goal in sight - Freedom! We are not here to fight each other. We are here as allies to fight for God, family, country, and FREEDOM! As William Wallace said in Brave Heart, “Unite the clans!”.

Your personal favorite may be Ron DeSantis, mine happens to be President Trump. But if DeSantis receives the nomination, I’ll support him, as I hope most other FReepers will.

Incidentally, we are getting way too much profanity. This is NOT DU, this is NOT CNN - (in deep voice) this IS FR!

Finally, if someone says STOP, then STOP! If someone asks you to take them off your ping list, then take them off! If someone asks you to stop posting to them, the adult and polite thing to do is to accommodate them.

Thank you all very much, and God bless you.

Trump wouldn’t fire him as he was Senior Executive Service.

That did not mean Trump needed to listen to Fauci. He could have had him stand in the background and say nothing.

Trump handled the pandemic poorly. He foisted the vaccine on us. He locked us down. And he spent trillions.

The entire government class was so terrified of making mistake, they were paralyzed into making “safe”decisions. They turned out to be horrible mistakes.

At least we know what NOT to do next time.

I do not agree. DeSantis did close beaches, other beaches were closed by local authorities. Trump made an overstrong statement but not a lie. More of a simplification. That is the reason I do not want to get into an argy bargy here. Both sides are using curated storylines.

“Surprise, Ron was a big lockdown governor on the China virus, sealing all beaches and everything else for an extended period of time,” Trump said in a statement posted to Truth Social March 22. “Remember, I left that decision up to the governors.”

DeSantis boasted that he kept beaches open in his recent book ”The Courage to Be Free” — a statement we found misleading. But Trump’s suggestion that DeSantis closed all the state’s beaches also misses the mark.

You bring up a good point. Trump could have been given a good briefing on pandemics in an afternoon. He isn’t stupid. But a relatively smart person could understand viruses and pandemics at a graduate school level after reading three books on the subject. It’s not hard. It’s not even really “science class.”

He did not seem to understand how viruses spread and why a coronavirus has never been “cured.”

It was actually frustrating and sad to watch him flounder.
