North Carolina Congressman Chuck Edwards, NC-11, has introduced the Stop Pot Act, which would withhold federal funding from states and tribes that allow the use of recreational marijuana.
NC congressman introduces 'Stop Pot Act' to curb recreational marijuana legalization
The bill calls for withholding 10 percent of federal highway funds from areas that violate federal law under the Controlled Substances Act, which prohibits recreational marijuana and classifies it as a Schedule I drug.
Edwards released the following statement:
"The laws of any government should not infringe on the overall laws of our nation, and federal funds should not be awarded to jurisdictions that willfully ignore federal law. During a time when our communities are seeing unprecedented crime, drug addiction, and mental illness, the Stop Pot Act will help prevent even greater access to drugs and ease the strain placed on our local law enforcement and mental health professionals who are already stretched thin."
The bill does not apply to places that authorize medical marijuana use when prescribed by a licensed medical professional.
Edwards' bill comes as the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians is set for a referendum election next week that has a question about whether to legalize the sale and use of recreational marijuana on tribal lands.
If the EBCI's referendum passes, the Qualla Boundary will be the only place in North Carolina to buy marijuana legally for recreational use.
Good!
What an AH.
State’s rights, period.
Republicans want to lose so badly.
Not a right to get federal money. I’m not really for criminalizing it but I also wish less people who use it regularly. Thr federal dollars withheld from the state should be given back to the people though.
Oh that’s cute. The SOB wants to use the Rat extortion gig to keep them dayum Injuns from beatin out some of his buddies in the tobacco or alcohol industry from cashing in.
Wow, it’s not like there are more important issues going on now, like the existence of the country or nothin’.
I’ve seen tons of public service ads recently claiming smoking tobacco will kill you and vaping will maim you, but not a single one claiming smoking pot will kill or maim you. Based on the accuracy of the former two claims, common sense indicates the latter is harmful.
“The laws of any government should not infringe on the overall laws of our nation...”
How about: “the laws of any nation should not infringe on the rights of the people”?
We never gave the feds any license to regulate what we smoke when we ratified the Constitution.
“Not a right to get federal money.”
It’s OUR money. There is no such thing as “federal money”.
For whatever reason, we do not discuss any problems or dangers of marijuana. Yes if smoking cigarettes is harmful, it makes sense that smoking and inhaling another substance would have similar harm. But we aren’t supposed to discuss that issue with marijuana.
It’s certainly a danger, but people smoke tobacco and other nicotine products differently, since they are highly addictive.
Not many potheads are smoking 20 joints a day.
Two groups are opposed to legalization: Rural Republicans and Urban Democrats
He just lost re-election.
“It’s OUR money. There is no such thing as “federal money”.”
there is such a thing as constitutional money however.
Federal Reserve money, Zelenski money, and the ‘Big Guys’ money
recently I have begun to feel like I am being taxed without representation.
Are you high? People wake and bake and go all day. The feds love their law because they can selectively enforce it.
It is a lost cause... But legal, or illegal... It will always be sold and controlled by criminals. Legalized pot operations are losing money in Canada... Because nobody wants to pay exorbitant prices and then taxes on top of that for ‘legal’ pot.
Illegal pot is now selling for as low as $3 per gram... Previous to legalization it typically sold for $10 per gram... So the stupid government thought that selling it for $10+ taxes would go over well... Instead it went over like a led balloon. They are overpaying their legal suppliers and now they are stuck with dried out expensive pot that nobody wants, and they can’t sell.
Only government could make a product legal and then lose money trying to sell it.
You might be surprised.
Traffic on highways 19 and 74 will be awful once this passes. Which is a shame.
This will be an interesting development considering that no state in the south has passed legalization - the Cherokee could pull in customers from 6 states!
I can’t think of any other Indian tribal lands in the south. Are there any others? If not, what a run around state laws.
