The poll, published midday Tuesday and conducted after the release of Trump’s iconic mugshot on August 24, shows that 52 percent of registered Republicans and right-leaning independents back him for the nomination. He has gained five points of support since CNN’s June poll and currently sits 34 points ahead of DeSantis at 18 percent.

DeSantis’s support has withered by eight points since the last poll, when twenty-six percent of respondents supported him. In reference to CNN’s first GOP primary poll in March, when he and Trump garnered 36 percent and 40 percent, respectively, his support has been cut in half. The trend for both candidates since then has marked a net 30-point swing to Trump in Trump’s favor.
Beyond Trump and DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence and former Gov. Nikki Haley (R-SC) share third place at seven percent apiece in the latest poll. Haley is up two points from June, while Pence is down two points.

The race consists of GOP ghouls hoping Trump is imprisoned for life under phony charges. That’s the state of the Republican Party
Even CNN is calling the mugshot iconic? Is that true?
Republican primaries mean nothing. Why isn’t Trump 25-30 points ahead of Biden?
I remember the glee of people watching the polls in 2022. They ended up severely wrong. We had some here saying we’d win 40 seats and 7 or 8 senate seats. Oops.
It’s beginning to turn out that way (Mugshot’s iconic status). Trump has established a precedent, presented an image of himself that no other presidential candidate has ever done before, certainly no other previously elected president has ever done.
If he remains as high in the polls by this time next year, I expect several other GOP candidates will have already released similar ‘Bad Boy-Tough Guy” images of their own.
Just keeping up with the Kardashians, kind of thing.
I don’t see our Nikki releasing any such image. She’s too much establishment GOP and proper.
CNN is saying what I want to hear. Hurray for CNN.
Watch this and share it.

I didn’t always trust Newt (he is, after all a politician) and the 2008 video at the second link will speak to that. BUT, NEWT HAS CHANGED (AND AGED) AND GOT THIS ONE SPOT ON!
From his lips to God’s ear!

I remember two who were crowing about a Red Tsunami. One has left and the other is doing her best to move on hoping no one remembers 😁
Exactly. A pox on all of them.
Probably because it is --- 😁
That was great.
Yeah. I got a nasty post from one saying I didn’t know what I was talking about and always doom and gloom. Reality is not typical for some.
Since DeSantis has now taken himself out (or, more likely, his wife has taken him out), can we not move on to candidates that might be able to take on Trump, or at least have a credible run at Trump?
Honored. Thank you1

Where could that man be? Oh, where, oh where was he? Really, seriously, who is this possible candidate?

I wish I knew! But to have a chance of winning in Nov. 2024, they have to at least meet Rule #1:
1. Not pissed off Trump voters (no way to beat the Democrats without support of the GOP base).
Additional rules are quite obvious:
2. American
3. Good track record in high office, or equivalent
4. Values consistent with GOP voters (against WW3, agree that elections could be cleaner, ready to clean up DC)
Probably more rules, but hard to come up with them.
"Don't be stupid, be a smarty, come and join the Republican Party"
Yeah, Newt gets a lot of things right. And then he’ll go off and start singing the praises of someone like Tim Scott, how he represents the future of the Republican party, etc. It’s hard for me to understand how he seems to “totally get it”, one minute, and then says something so clueless, the next.
